Of course there are some who have designed and made their own websites but to those that aren't as internet savvy and are looking to possibly have a site made for their business... If you don't mind me asking what did you pay to have your website made for you?

I'm just curiouse considering the internet is probably the place where most do their business... How much did it cost you to have yours made and feel free to post a link to your website!!

Thanks!

There should be a Zero Option...... Cause My other half did mine for me :)

Not sure of the total cost of ours. There were .... extenuating circumstances around ours causing two different people to work on it. Still some work to be done on it tho as I think & discuss with The Lolo where we're headed in the future.

Hell I may scrap it eventually and shoot for a complete reworking once we finalize. As I understand it , the original builder did a lot of custom coding instead of working with templates.

Mine, like a number of people here.... is a freewebs site.... costs me $10 a month for the ads free version.... It's ok, it works.... looks decent!

I can't complain about it really.... Costs nothing to start off with, the only cost that comes is if you want an ads free one. So there's really no option for the cost of it, just my own time....

I would say for that situation you could vote "did myself" even though your other half did... I guess I should have included "my other half did it" next to the did it myself option...

Yeah, but a friend could have done it too... LOL Maybe "nothing, someone did it for me"

Not at all savvy -- but I did mine myself. It's not all fancy but it's easy to follow not too distracting and gets the point across.

I don't have a website but when the time comes I'll build it myself. I build herp sites for herps and my sites are usually pretty pricey but I also have 100% satisfaction so you get what you pay for.

Sputnik you know you could go with like 1and1.com get a real domain and everything for like $23 for the first month and then like $25 every 6 months...right?

Aarons sites are great, he did a great job on mine, and it is extremely easy to update on your own, even without web experience. I couldn't be happier. Check it out. www.prototypepythons.com

The only problem with Windows servers is that they have problems with PHP, and since my sites are usually fairly PHP heavy, it's unacceptable. Also a very large number of useful scripts out there are PHP based. I would only go with Windows if you're writing your site in ASP. Otherwise you want to go with a Linux/Unix server.

Nope, didn't know that.... thanks for the info. I'm too small scale to really have anything fancy right now, but if we get to the point of needing something better we'll certainly do something better then freewebs.

Maybe this breeding season's results will give us a better view of the future for us at least....

1and1.com has a website builder I believe. It isn't something that I would use but I'm a Freelance designer so yeah. But you'll save a few $ you can also purchase your domain and have it up and going, tends to give you a bit more cred then having "Freewebs" in the address.

Did it myself (nothing fancy) so my cost is less than $5 a month for hosting and $9.99 a year for the domain

Jeff and Deborah, I think both your sites look very nice!

I wrote my website by hand with basic HTML and a few other things I found here and there. I don't know how to use any web design programs but I'd really love to learn dreamweaver sometime. I don't dislike my current website but I'm sure using a program would speed the process up quite a bit. Feel free to check out my site in my sig. I got my domain name from and am hosted by Heath Warren - warrenreptiles.com. I pay $60/year for unlimited webspace and a ton of email addresses.

Your website may be the only exposure the world has to you. If it looks cheap and incomplete, thats how most people will view you. If you really want to make a living selling snakes, or anything online. Take the time and money (if you can of course) to have a nice site created.

Even if you don't have a full e-commerce engine pay to have a good designer create a "brochure" style site where people can email and/or call you to make a purchase. A small professional looking site will take you farther than a cheap shabby looking e-commerce site.

Out of date information or websites that have not been updated frustrate me and make me think the owner worked on it once and forgot about it. Is this how they are with other things?

I agree both Jeff and Deb have some really nice looking sites  But I wouldn't mind having a site even as nice as yours Diana. Really nice looking site you have put together :)

Yeah I feel the same way when I see outdated sites. Once I go to a site a couple times and see the same stuff that is outdated. I tend not to go back to those sites.

Thanks Diana and John, I just try to keep my site simple and not too flashy all it is, is basic html and I use FrontPage for it.

It is easy to use and make uploading your site much easier, yes it is not dreamweaver however it works fine for my needs and I tend to like being in control of everything so I do everything myself including designing my own website.

A basic site design can run from 1k to 3k for a more complex design depending on usability and features built into it. Its all relative...

I've built a few herp related sites over the past 8 months or so and have done complex to real simple ones. The more complex it gets, the more it costs. For instance 2 of my recent sites use a custom built php script that gave the owner of the sites the capability to control their for sale pages with a few clicks of a button.

You can see that on

http://www.heathersherps.com
http://www.whitediamondreptiles.com

I have another site in development for a larger breeder that is going to use a really heavily modified version of my script. I wish I could post a screen cap of it, it is by far my best herp related work yet... I find it real exciting to be building sites for pythons. I've been freelancing for 10+ years now... It's a breath of fresh air....

It all depends on what you are comfortable using to best represent your business on the web. Some like do it yourself home made sites, others want more fancy ones.

We created our first attempt with basic html we learned from reading online . From a business standpoint I believe paying a profesional is the way to go. You still need to learn how to update the site to keep it fresh. We made a second attempt with a template and added a blog with wordpress which is really easy to use . We also set up our first forum with software called simple machine forum and is very similar to v bullitin. We found bluehost to be a great host with no setup fee free domain and $80.00 a year 2500 E mail and a load of software and features. I have learned alot and the site is getting better and better . Now I need to learn graphics ! There is other aspects to consider like search engine optimization and keywords . The more you work on your site the better it will become.
