Chomper seems like a very mellow fellow. I want a savie real bad, but dont have the space for one at the moment. Really cool pics and thanks for sharing.

Thanks. and kudos for thinking it through. all too many times people get in way over their heads by impulse buying animals.

Great post - he strikes me as one cool dude!

He's not trying to eat that plate. He's gonna hand it to you for seconds. Venison actually sounds loke a good choice for a meat meal. I've been debating with myself for years whether or not to get a Sav. I really like them, but like Chris I just don't have room for a proper enclosure for an adult.

Venison that is cut from areas free of fatty tissues, it's almost pure proteins.
Besides that, out here it's all but free to obtain.

Low fat and lots of exercise make a healthy lizard.

When he runs outside, he eats every sort of beetle or bug that crosses his path.

Down at the creek, his all time fave is crayfish, he will actively flip rocks and root around looking for them.

That's gotta be quite a sight :D. It's good to have a place he can roam and search for food like he would in the wild.

Considering my property is large enough to have it's own zip code, and I don't use that stuff.. It's not really a concern I have.

My lot is surrounded by the red lines. I know both neighbors well and they don't use pesticides either.

Good grief Wayne, you've got enough property to have your own animal sanctuary there. Hire me to be a grounds keeper?

Maintaining that race track is a full time job Quig, but it pays the bills.

Oh it is an animal sanctuary, no one dares mess with my animals, I treat trespassers with EXTREME prejudice.

The herps on my land are just as much important as the ones in the house.

Thanks folks..

It bothers me that so many others never stand a chance.

There is some joker selling gravid wild caught monitors right now, it's disgusting...

These kinds of people should somehow be banned from the hobby. Maybe better yet, shot on sight :D. It's bad enough they get shipped over here by the thousands and many die in transit. Then more die in pet shops for lack of proper care, and of those that make it into the hands of the impulse buyers many die for lack of proper care also.

I forget the exact numbers, but when I was really active on the kingsnake monitor forum, it was discussed often, of all the animals gathered up it's an alarming number (somewhere around 10%) that ever even live past year one.

Hangin' in KS monitor forum is where I gleened all my info. It's just sad because Savs are such a personable critter. Something you just don't get from most of the other monitors.

Chompers is a cool Sav with a knowledgeable caring owner. Most of the tame savs I see are are overly obese.

they're cute when they are babies, then new keepers come to the harsh realization that they have claws, teeth and food response, suddenly they aren't so cute anymore...it is sad

This weekend I went to a Chicago Herp Society show at the Milwaukee Museum and Bob Bavirsha brought his 56 lb, 5 ft black throat. I had no Idea they got that big. He was all fighting trim too-not at all obese and with a tail like a baseball bat.

Some monitor species do get huge. Chomper is close to maxed out in size now.

That black throat sounds a bit over weight too.
