View Full Version : Prevent a Mite & Reptile Relief combo
ZombieTom 11-12-2010, 08:48 AM LLLreptile is selling a Prevent a Mite & Reptile Relief combo pack. I've used PAM before and know it works, but would I need the Reptile Relief or are they just trying to get me to spend more money?
If it at all adds to the treatment and helps my reptiles please let me know? if not I think I'll just stick to PAM.
SNSnakes 11-12-2010, 02:37 PM PAM works great all on it's own. I think they want you to spend more money.

I'd have to agree. I used reptile relief before I found PAM with little success. Had to retreat numorous times with it.
snakeden80 11-12-2010, 03:29 PM i use both and have been for a while...pam work great but you cant put it on the snake.reptile relief can be put on the snake which is great to get them off fast.both do a great job on mites but i will say reptile relief will not kill the eggs so it alone is not prefect.ive had great results using both
jjollie 11-13-2010, 07:30 AM I have had good results with both, but reptile relief needs to be used with some that kills the eggs.
DanielA989 11-13-2010, 10:52 AM I heard that Provent a mite is nothing but a lice spray you can buy at CVS or Walgreens for $3.60 a can. I've seen people spray there tables with it at the show. Never tried it but if it does work it beats the heck out of $20 a can.
TraceyS 11-13-2010, 11:28 AM Call me slow but I'm reading the thread and seeing the abbrev PAM and thinking 'damn, they use cooking spray and it works', lol!! Yes....its been a slow morning.... :o)

I do see people spray their tables with PAM at shows. It always makes me wonder about the vendors that have bugs and invertebrates - if that "cloud" reaches their stock they are done for. I prefer spraying the table cloths outside of the show room. (or preferably, at home before I pack them to go)

Good point! Watched a few people at our last Shows spray rings around their tables because of mite suspicion from another vendor. Not only were there a few scorpions and tarantulas at my table but the table next to me was selling feeders. Interesting practice! Not sure how much help it would be as mites can be carried in on clothing etc anyway... I always do my best to quarantine both new, and my own stuff, when I return from a show regardless.... In regards to the Provent a Mite and Reptile Relief, not sure if either product is even available here in Canada yet?? Only product I keep hearing of is Nix....
FloridaHogs 11-13-2010, 06:54 PM Don't use that stuff at all. No poisons allowed around my hoggies. To many reports of neuro issues after use with them.
Kerig3 11-20-2010, 04:57 AM Anyone use Balck Knight II (BKII)? I had bought a can almost 3 years ago when it was sold regularly by ProExotics, who at the time had a downloadable mite killing strategy guide on their website for using BKII (no longer on their site, but I had downloaded a copy). Luckily I haven't ever had to use it yet, but I need to know whether my can of BKII can still be used confidently should the need arise. :dunno:
We use BK II, best product I have ever seen for lizard mites, flying geckos in particular get sprayed before they are even out of the bag. But I honestly don't know what the shelf life is, sorry! I can check on monday and see if there's an expiration date on the can or anything and let you know. If I forget and don't post an answer PM me and remind me, I'm not great about remembering to check the group of threads.
Azo Reptiles 12-21-2010, 03:20 AM Yes PAM is basically re-badged lice killer. If you look at the active ingredients it's the same as just about every other lice spray killer out there. Honestly I would never use it as if it's not safe to be on the animal then why take the chance around it? True reptile relief does not work well on eggs but it can be used on the snake itself. So if you treat the snake the mites will not be able to re infest the snake. Yes it does take a few treatments but it does work if you follow directions and common sense.
DanielA989 12-21-2010, 06:08 PM Made some calls to a few friends and NOBODY I talked with is using PAM. Everyone has been using Equate lice spray for years. I have no experience with it but some big names have sweared by it. I think my $20 PAM days are over.

These are canine preparations consisting of pyrethroids with a hormone-like growth regulator that prevents molting and egg-hatching, so surviving mites dont reproduce.
Ovitrol is for use directly on dogs. I dont apply it directly on snakes. I spray the containers or cages a week before attending shows or obtaining new animals, so it has time to dry. Siphotrol is a premise spray for the house or building. I used both for a previous mite infestation and one application resulted in a complete permanent kill with no adverse effects on the animals. i moved my insects to the garage when treating the house. I now treat all of my supplys with siphotrol before doing a show. I spray it into a cloth and wipe down the tables rather than spraying it on the table to avoid affecting a neighbors inverts. its as pricey as PAM but its worth it as far as I am concerned.
I also spray all my luggage and hotel rooms with it to avoid bedbugs anytime I have to stay in a hotel.

I just use gasolene and matches....
That does sound interesting.... another way to treat mites it sounds.
Azo Reptiles 12-25-2010, 11:26 PM Ovitrol and Siphotrol works really well so long as you don't get any on the snakes. It is crazy expensive though.
royerreptiles 09-16-2011, 01:29 AM We too have used the Equate brand Lice bedding spray, very successfully! Everyone here is correct, POM is just re-badged. The active ingredient is permethrin, both cans have the same concentration. If you compare the rest of the ingredients side by side, they are listed in the same order, and in the same amounts.
