View Full Version : Santa Gecko
Varanus99 12-15-2008, 11:28 PM I work in apartment buildings. Some of the folks are good people but dont have very much money. I was talking to a single mom who has two young kids. So we're chatting and I notice the kids have lizard pictures in their room. Of course, that grabs my attention.
I ask whats up with that? It seems the kids love lizards and watch all the shows on TV. They saved their money and bought some stuff. I say lemme check it out.
They have a 15 gallon tank which they got at a garage sale for $1. A screen cover, a small water bowl, one of those half log hides (we can do better than that) and lo and behold they have a heating pad. They've really been working hard on this.
It seems the kids have been using the computer at school to study reptiles and reptile care. So I decide to grill the kids. I start asking them questions about general lizard care. And they knew a lot. First thing they told me "Dont lift them by the tail! It will come off and they will regenerate but it wont look as nice!".
Well well well. Im very impressed.
So I go back to the mom and ask what kind of lizard are they interested in?
They want a leopard gecko.
Ha! I can do that! Im crawling with them. After a short conversation with the mother she agrees to allow the kids to adopt one of my normal leopard geckos as an early Xmas present IF they can answer any question on leo care I ask them and set up the cage the way I tell them to. Sounds good to me.
So this weekend it goes down. The kids are gonna study and set up the cage the way I explained. If all looks good they get a super surprise and I find a home for one of my normal leopard geckos.
They are a really nice family. Ill even get them started with a critter keeper full of crickets.
Those kids better hit the net hard. I aint playin' :)
Santa Gecko is comin' to town!

Im kinda following WestCoast Pythons idea. Make'em learn how to care for the critter before they get the critter.
And dont worry. I will be doing surprise inspections. Nor has got me all military. Hoorah!!
Preseeeeeeent water dish! You call that clean? I wouldnt use that dish to wash my socks! I want that dish so ship shape and squared away that the Queen of England would drink tea out of it! Well any time, sweethearts!

E-pig! Whats up, buddy?
Yeah it should be fun. Spread a little scaley Xmas cheer.
And one less mouth to feed and poop to clean for yours truly. Everybody wins.

Yup. Spreading crickets where ever I go like snowflakes.
FloridaHogs 12-16-2008, 12:03 AM That is awesome V!! Those kids will probably remember this for the rest of their lives!
KordeksKritters 12-16-2008, 09:03 AM V, that is really awesome! Talk about a way to bring kids into this hobby the RIGHT way! Don't grill them too hard, but give them some caresheets to tape up to the walls too. But the thing I have found is that if a kid is REALLY ready for one of these little guys, they will end up knowing more than you do before you know it!
A trick I tell parents that might help you/them - tell the kids to sit down a right a paper to you telling you why they think they deserve to have the gecko. Tell them they need to explain what sort of research they have done, what their schedule will be for the gecko (feeding, cleaning, etc), what they plan to do if they go to college or get involved in after school sports, etc, and most importantly, why they want a lizard and not a cat or a dog or a hamster or some other fuzzy thing. Keep the care stuff out of the paper, just a "why I want this and why I feel I am responsible enough to have it" idea. My kids have to do it with anything living or expensive they want. Frame it and give it to their mom as her Christmas present so she can see over and over the heart her kids have (they really show the heart and love in those papers).

Seriously Bro, it is awesome what you are doing.
A friend of my wife's has a son who is 8 years old and has a brain tumor. I have a gecko I saved for him from last years clutch that is waiting for him to come home from his recent brain surgery. He has a corn snake he got from me 2 years ago for his birthday and is doing great with it.
If it can bring a little happiness into this kids life, I would give him all of my geckos. Seeing what thie little guy has gone through has really made me appreciate my kids being healthy....
Big V....kudos on the great gift for the kids. It will make their Christmas. I'm sure they'll pass your test with flying colors. :yourock:
