View Full Version : the sable trivia
man-made evolution 12-15-2010, 11:26 PM I want to know what you all know about sables! I have hurd that if produced with certain genes, they cause problems. My question is, "what genes are these, what genes have produced sable morphs with no problems, and would you add a sable to your collections?" :dunno:
Sputnik 12-15-2010, 11:41 PM There appears to be a problem with breeding sable to champagne - the resulting cross producing a wobble effect.... like that in spiders.
tristatepythons 12-16-2010, 12:57 AM We have heard that the sable/spider combo is a problem. In another thread someone mentioned the super sable being an issue. We actually produced 3 super sables this year, 2 males and 1 female. The female looks awesome and is growing rapidly. It was a joint project with a friend, his male was doing good, he gave it a hopper mouse one day, it hit and wrapped it; he checked on it a few minutes later and both the mouse and the snake were dead. Our male has not taken food on his own yet. He is gaining weight, but has had to be force fed everytime.
As for combos, I have seen some really cool stuff produced by Matt Lee, who was involved in proving out the sable gene with Erik Burkett. He produced a sable/lesser, a super cinnamon/sable/lesser, and my favorite a cinnamon/sable/lesser.
This season we are hoping to produce a sable/yellowbelly. We have witnessed several locks, so hopefully we'll hit the odds.
No I would not add one . We are trying to avoid the morphs with known neuro problems .
joe23 12-16-2010, 12:05 PM u probably hit the same problem when u mix it with the hg woma.
so we have sable spider, sable champagne, super sable and probably sable hg woma that cause these problems (or can cause these problems).
carol: do u have pics from these sable combos?

Actually this is Jim. :-)
Anyways, we didn't get any pics of those snakes. Sorry. Like I said though the female is doing great, so it may only be an issue with the males. At the next White Plains show, I am going to try to talk to Matt Lee, and see what he has to say about these issues.

wow thats tragic! Do you think it was over stressed from eating or what could have caused it to keel over and die just like that?

Don't really know. Our friend said he was eating just fine. It's strange only the males seem to.be having issues, there five eggs and all the females are doing well.
Sables are great .... I have some stuff going on over here that might change your minds....spiders wobble ... sable spiders don't live .... super sables can be a little funny ... super cinnies duck bill ..... caramel females don't lay good eggs .... lucy's can have funny faces .... pin's don't breed great .... pieds suck at eating ..... pretty soon we'll be out of snakes to breed!!
If you like them....get one! they're pretty much giving them away and trust me....they cross great.

I see what your saying. With so many morps being known for something wrong you have to expect something going unplanned, but I guess I have just hurd more people talk about the sable being a failure then an asset. Although that can be good to because more people might overlook the sable and it might just deliver something amazing and game changing on us.
Azo Reptiles 12-21-2010, 10:54 PM It all depends on where you got your sable from. There are some bad lines out there. Or it could just be bad luck too. Sometimes snakes or any animal(even people) just drop dead with no apparent health issues at all.
jallenfl 01-21-2011, 01:11 AM Have nice sable female unfortunately she is a pain. She slugged out as a virgin now around 2900gr and wont breed at all. Shows no interest and wont eat. Feed live she will kill rodent and leave it behind. Love her to death. When I saw sable mojo I picked her up from a buddy for a steal but depressing now...
Oddball Exotics 01-21-2011, 09:11 AM stick with it ...she will come around! If this stuff was to easy, everyone would be doing it!!Give her a little time.I had my last 4 girls slug out last season, and they were virgins aswell.Got them back up to size and giving "em a go this year.Patience grasshopper...
