Varanus99 12-20-2008, 06:12 PM Not any more. I used to. I kinda miss having fish. I dont think I have the patience any more for non-air breathers.
I like the clown loach. Those guys can get BIG! Some folks dont realize how big they can get.
What kinda cats and tetras ya got in there? I think I see a red eye but Im not sure.
What ya got two power filters running on that thing? No wonder the water is so clean. Overkill! Best way to go.
I also really like how its not overcrowded. I always preferred just to have a few, nice looking fish in a big tank rather than what most people do "Lets see how many we can stuff in there until the ammonia wipes tham all out". :D
norsmis 12-20-2008, 06:31 PM Nice set ups Bro! I had a 55 gallon in Hawaii with african Cichlids...
anendeloflorien 12-20-2008, 06:37 PM Fah.....Ish???? What are these fah....ish you speak of??? Lol no haven't kept those things for a while. My father does have a nice saltwater setup but it's just too much work for me to set up my own when I can go over there and watch his tank when I feel the urge to watch something like that. The rest of the time my snakes more than supply my need for natural beauty :D
wolfyhound 12-20-2008, 07:05 PM At the height of my obcession I had over 20 saltwater tanks. I bred seahorses for a few years(did decently). My husband liked frogfish and angler fish. Those were cool.
I breifly did cichlids, and we had a few general saltwater tanks, and a few freshwater tanks. I also bred show bettafish for about 2 years.
Now I dont even have a betta.
147BOAS 12-20-2008, 07:40 PM WELL i did have a 125 gallon but when we moved i sold it but the wife now wants a 55 gallon so i am sure we will be getting one
Southern Wolf 12-20-2008, 07:43 PM I dont have any of my tanks.... but I do have a couple of shots of some of the cichlids I have had.

constrictorkeeper 12-20-2008, 07:51 PM i've had and bred lotsa h2o dwellers in my days.
haven't had any for 25+ years.
most i ever had was 8 tanks set up at once.
those were the days when the rents wouldn't let me have anything terrestrial.
but i did love my fishies, and the move to herps seemed like a natural progression.
nice tank. sparse, but clean.

Yeah I like the Loaches and so the better half one of her fav's. The cat is an african type cat fish that's all I know on him. The two power filters are a bit over kill... I always like over kill and have always had less problems. You should see my 150 and how I have it filtered... I have an Emperor good for at least 75-100 gallons and (2) Rena 175 gallon cannister filters on it. There's an hughe Oscar and 5-6 Tin foil barbs in it...really Big fish I love them but they are messy eaters reason for over kill (lol)
Mrs. Sputnik 12-21-2008, 03:36 AM So that is what aqauriums are for??
Sweet tank setup
Halfdawg 12-21-2008, 03:48 AM I had 5 tanks setup at one point in time, but they are all gone. I want to get back into them one day soon. I am going to get a 240 gallon tank next with Tropheus.

The infamous Oscars. The slobs of the fish world, LOL!
I used to work in pet shops. We sold a ton of Oscars. As babies they are neat looking fish. And Oscars suffer from the same cool factor that burmese pythons do.
It SOUNDS cool to have a really, really big fish/snake that eats everything in sight. Yeah, it SOUNDS cool. Until you do it. LOL!
Then they would come back in with the stories...
Dude, he ate all my other fish! He even ate the pleco! And left the hard shell behind!!!
Dude, he moved all the gravel to one side of the tank!
Dude, his poops are horse sized! The filter wont pick them up I have to net them out!
Dude, he keeps moving my frog man all over the place!
Dude, he keeps breaking my heaters!
Dude, can you take this thing back?
Not that I have anything against Oscars. Or burmese pythons. Well, thats not true I have a little something against burmese pythons I used to have a couple that were the spawn of the devil. But I like Oscars. Lotta personality. A good "pet" fish. But like burms, if you're gonna keep Oscars you gotta love'em. Cuz if you just have a passing fancy they are gonna get on your nerves right quick. :D
jknudson 12-21-2008, 05:32 PM Gotta love fish tanks! They were my first love before reptiles, but when I started with the snakes I took down my saltwater tanks. Right now Mel and I have a WAY overstocked 55 gallon salt fish only, that will be upgraded with my empty 75 gallon.
Nice aquariums everyone. Jeff would like to set another one up but we simply have no where for it to go. I refuse to have it smack dab in the middle of the living room.

That's why I got 150 gallon I researched before hand and planned for overkill tank and filters..I got him when he was about 2-3" long with the Red Tin Foil Barbs who were 1" if that...I had a Pleco that was close to 12" long that the Oscar picked on till I moved him to another tank. Well here is a pick of him and the barbs..When I was cleaning his tank he loves to go for the fingers and hates the magnet that cleans the glass. (lol)

THe Oscar does have HIH "Hole in the Head" is what they call it..I have tried everything to cure it..everyone says it's hard to fix...I just keep his tank very clean so infections won't set in. I have had him now for 4 years and other then it look ugly on him. It doesn't stop him from growing or eating..He's happy I'm happy =) The Barbs are a Very hardy fish and they get along well together..They were raised together so that helps..adding new fish now would be just feeding the Oscar (lol)

xanaxez 12-21-2008, 07:30 PM nice set ups you 2, i one day will own another salt water tank lol
Varanus99 12-21-2008, 07:54 PM I never had the guts to go saltwater. Back when I kept fish the whole saltwater hobby was still kinda choppy. The wet/dry and canister filters were just coming out. Before that people made due with an undergravel filter, powerheads and also a power filter. Without much success. We used to say you dont buy saltwater fish you just rent them.
With all the new stuff available today it doesnt seem quite as difficult. Still a good chunk of coin to set up though.
But there is no comparison between salt and fresh water. Especially a nice reef tank with live rock and all those little suckers sneakin around in there. It can breathtaking if done well.
Southern Wolf 12-21-2008, 07:58 PM Yeah.... I would love to have a SW tank... I just dont have the time to keep and maintain one. Ive got an almost empty 45 cube tank and a 52 gal sitting empty... that is just beggin for saltwater.

I was the same way..If I only had fish now I'd be into salt water fish tomorrow..but like you said I too lack the guts and was nervous. It's a little more expensive and I don't think you have the wiggle room for error like you do on fresh water tanks.

This is going back almost 20 years, but I watched so many people try so hard and fail I just couldnt bring myself to take the plunge. I had my freshwater tanks down to a science. Everything was humming along. I hadnt lost a fish in forever. I felt like saltwater would be starting from square one again.
I bought a bunch of books and read about it. Came very close. Just never did it. I didnt have very much money back then anyway. I mean you could get a nice freshwater fish for a couple bucks. Even the CHEAP saltwater fish were pricey at least in comparison.
And no you have very little wiggle room. No wiggling allowed. I screwed up a few times with my tanks and the fish were ok. Dont think I could say the same if they were saltwater.
FloridaHogs 12-21-2008, 08:34 PM Had a saltwater that was stocked with fish I collected myself when I was doing Marine Biology, now just a simple 20 gal freshy, but it is way overdue for a major breakdown and cleaning, so no pics.

Saltwater isn't that bad, you just have to spend a lot of money to get it setup right from the beginning. I used to have a 180 gallon tank (with corner overflows) and a 125 gallon tank used as a sump. I also had 150 pounds of live rock in the show tank. I could go for hours talking about the setup, LOL. So I better quit for now.

That sounds impressive!!! I love hearing about set up's and I admire anyone who has or had salt water tank they hands down some of the most beatiful fish tanks.
ReptileMan27 12-21-2008, 09:10 PM I use to keep alot of fish but not really anymore.. Never seemed to have good luck with fish :(. I only have 1 fish left from my last set-up.. Its a big catfish that I dont think I could kill even if I wanted to lol..
Southern Wolf 12-21-2008, 09:41 PM could make for a good meal though

Yeah, I love the saltwater setups. I never really got into keeping corals, I always like all the different colors of fish. I had a blue-spotted stingray for almost 2 years in a 125 gallon tank, I then traded it in at a local fish store to change the tank to more of a community tank. When I ordered it at the pet store the guy told me they were real hard to keep alive and it would probably die within a month. Guess I did something right. I guess I need to get a good scanner to get those old pics uploaded.
