View Full Version : blanchardi (Yucatan milks)
DMong 01-17-2011, 10:00 PM Got this young pair of EXTREMELY rare milks a few days ago from a good frind of mine. The W/C 100% pure patternless male was captured just outside of Quintana Roo, Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula on a small chicken ranch several years ago, and the original mother was acquired from the Moscow zoo some years ago, but has since died.
Note the very long pointed heads on these, and incomplete temporal bands indicative of blanchardi. Other Latin races have far blunter heads and the temporal banding crosses the two parietal scales on top of the head. Even blanchardi that do have connected temporal bands, theirs are usually very thin and are always rear of the two big parietal scales on top of the head just as a few others from this same clutch have.
Mine are offspring from earlier babies that were bred back to the W/C patternless father. I am very stoked to be working with these guys!!

Here is the patternless W/C father that resides with my good friend in California........

Herper55 01-17-2011, 11:57 PM Those are really cool. It must be pretty cool to work with a rare reptile. congrats!
Dan W 01-18-2011, 05:59 AM Good luck with those. They are very nice.

Thanks John!,........
Yeah, they are pretty cool little critters for sure. Yep, our good "friend" has a few left, some aberrant, some more normally ringed, and possibly some in betweener's too...LOL!
Oh yes, good ol' S.B. does indeed have his young adults for sale. I correspond with him fairly often(just today as a matter of fact), and am scoring some of his text-book genuine abnorma this coming season. Very pricey, but very "real-deal" and unique from the other typical stuff out there..LOL!
Yeah, John, you can't go wrong with certain types of Latin milks! , so go score yourself some more sweetness!..LOL!..

norsmis 01-19-2011, 05:26 AM Nice snags bro! I love the head shape on these guys. A lot different than the milks I am accustomed to. Congrats!
guyergenetics 01-19-2011, 10:21 AM I've not even ever heard of these. They seem pretty cool! Best of luck with your breeding projects!
DMong 01-19-2011, 05:12 PM Nice snags bro! I love the head shape on these guys. A lot different than the milks I am accustomed to. Congrats!
Thanks Ron!,.....
Yes indeed, these are one of the rarest milks in the entire world in regards to their availability. Same thing with dixoni, micropholis, smithi, and even abnorma. They are EXTREMELY rare and virtually unobtainable. I know of ONE pair of dixoni that "would" have been some founding stock for the U.S., but they went back to England with an importer never to be seen again back in the early 90's......oh the pain!!. I know of some true locality abnorma(Guatemalan milks) imported directly from there many years ago, and these specimens are simply as nice as they come. As a matter of fact, his nice abnorma specimens are in several milksnake books like ~Markels~ from the mid 90's and Applegates old book too, as well as a couple others. They are owned by a good friend of mine that is absolutely "ANAL" about only owning the purest most genuine forms of the snakes he owns, and all of his collection key-out fantastically meristic and mensural-wise for their very specific races. So that is always a great thing.
I am the very same way with my stuff too, but of course the "hobby" Hondos we are all familiar and enjoy are an entirely different story even from decades ago, so they are what they are, and I do like them just the same. After all, one cannot "recall" all of them and start over again..LOL! I go into alot of that on my website's home page explaining about todays "hobby" Hondurans.
This same buddy of mine also has two bloodlines of 100% locality hondurensis originating from Northwestern and central Nicaragua too. These are basically THE only known lines of locality hondurensis in the entire country as well.
Yes, everything with rings and a snout band don't equate to a Honduran. that's for sure!..LOL!
cheers!, ~Doug
DMong 01-19-2011, 05:30 PM I've not even ever heard of these. They seem pretty cool! Best of luck with your breeding projects!
Yeah, these are sort of similar to a second-hand furniture store getting their hands on the rarest "Chippendale" hand-carved antique owned by someone very famous..LOL!. They are simply just that rare an item in the hobby.
Besides this particular source for this line I have, I have only ever seen just a few select photographs of these in certain literature, and of course the beautiful example in "Markel's...Milksnakes and Kingsnakes" also originating from the Yucatan state of Quintana Roo, Mexico just as my hatchling's sire was from.
Anyway, yeah man, I love these pointy-headed critters!..

Bigtattoo 01-19-2011, 06:43 PM Geez Doug your collection just makes me sick. LOL Between you, JL and SB I might as well just throw in the towel now and keep goldfish.
I don't normally go for patternless snakes but that sire of your babies is just smoking hot. I wish you luck with this project and hopefully they might throw you some babies that look like Grandpa.

LMAO!!!,...man!, I was cracking up over that one Big T!...that was funny as all hell man! :lmao: :lmao:
Yeah, I gotta agree with you on that bro. I don't go all bonkers on many patternless types either to be quite honest, but just the fact that these guys grandfather was such an extremely unique type of snake to BEGIN WITH, his being patternless and of course being W/C from the chicken ranch just outside of Quintana Roo, Mexico just adds even more to his awesome uniqueness. The tell-tale black scale tipping on what would normally be the red rings sort of "accentuates" the look sort of too I think, and it is also a very key feature in their meristics for the subspecies too, so it all goes great together for me.
I wouldn't doubt one tiny bit that these two might produce some patternless kids too, because some of the others in this same clutch, as well as a couple previous clutches that these came from had some very aberrant spotted individuals and partially patternless siblings too. I actually had a choice of the types that were available, and I actually chose to acquire the more "classic" ringed phenotypes only because of the fact that I wanted to at least start out with more typical types that would best represent the race as a whole in the wild. But when they throw some crazy stuff my way, I sure as heck won't be tossing them into the freezer..LOL! :lmao:
Man. that "goldfish" comment you made had me freakin ROLLIN!!..:lmao:

Jlassiter 01-19-2011, 09:37 PM It's Okay BigT.....I envy everyones' snakes...........

Glad you got a good laugh out of it. I was serious.

As you probably already know. This go round I am focusing mostly on Pits and Drys and feel I have a pretty good start there. Although I am still planning on adding more kings this year thanks to you. Who knows I might be able to talk SB and JL out of some babies too. Where the heck is the crossed fingers smiley?
I have to agree on the extreme uniqueness of the patternless. That it is a W/C locality morph is just incredible. Especially considering my experience with the attitudes of most Mexicans towards snakes. The only good snake is a dead one. LOL
As I stated elsewhere regarding the black tipping on the babies that is also what impressed me on the patternless. Just a stunning animal.
If you need any freezer space let me know. I have plenty of room for your offcasts in my freezer. LOL
Hey JL Serpent envy is that a good thing? LOL

Yeah Big T,......it sounds like you have quite a nice Pit and Drymarchon collection bro!. I will have to visit a couple Pit/Dry forums and check the stuff out too. You must probably know Ginter, "DISCERN", KJ, John Cherry and a bunch of other guys that are also deeply involved with those I would guess?
Yes, it's surprising the male patternless blanchardi ever even made it over here without experiencing the "business" end of a shovel or machette first from the Mexican chicken farmers over there where he was originally captured..LOL!!... :lmao: :lmao:
I will definitely keep you in mind for your roomy freezer space as well..LMAO!!
I will sure do my very best to supply you and the other's with some nice floridana when the time comes, I just hope things go better this year with them than they did last year. It was quite disappointing. I will however have another breeder or two ready this year as well, so like you said earlier...."finger's crossed" for sure..LOL!!
the "serpent envy" thing had me rolling once again bro!!..HAHAHAA!!. I love it man!.....not the "envy" itself of course, but your funny comment regarding it..LMFAO!!!!!
later man, ~Doug

Thanks Doug I am working on building my collection back up and thanks to some breeders I feel I have acquired some nice founding stock.
I do know of them through the forums but wouldn't say I know them although I hope I may build relationships with them as time goes on.
My biggest influence in Pits is Bart Bruno from back in the day. He was kind of thinning down his Pit collection and I was a fortunate beneficiary of some great locality animals. Especially his NJ Northern Pines.
The freezer space is always available for you my friend. LOL

Ah yes!!,..the well-known Bart Bruno!!. Yes, his name goes waaay back!. You definitely have some kick-ass stuff then!!
My friend Billy(DISCERN) over on the KS Pituophis forum talks about him and the other's all the time. Billy has some awesome "top-shelf" pit stuff too. He is hardcore into those.
I'll definitely have to see some of your animals sometime soon. I am not a pit "guru" like some of the other guys you know about, or even yourself, but I know a little. It's freakin hard to specialize in, and know all the "ins-and-outs" of every darn type of snake as you well know..LOL!.
regards, ~Doug
Jlassiter 01-20-2011, 07:58 PM Let's not forget Jason Nelson at Envy or Tom Stevens when it comes to Killer Pituophis.......

Pastor_Hanzo 01-31-2011, 02:35 PM Wow the patternless one looks really, really cool!
DMong 02-04-2011, 06:18 PM Wow the patternless one looks really, really cool!
Thanks!......
Yes, he is one truly unique individual. Heck, even very normal individual's are unheard of in any collections here in the U.S. and in Europe too, much less a bizarre patternless one..
thanks again!.......I LOVE these little dudes!
