View Full Version : The problem with non-editable threads...

I completely understand the "you wrote it, you own it." aspect of non-editable thread topics and replies, however there are some issues that this causes for the already honest....

first off, if I add pics and realize a day later that they are dead-linked there is no way for me to edit the addresses. If I manage my photo accounts in other websites and it removes the addresses to any pics then I have no way of fixing the problem on BLBC.

next, I sometimes make mistakes in my typing, there is nothing worse than looking like an idiot and not being able to edit the mistake before being called out by the spelling/grammar nazi's. I'm fine with making a mistake, I'd like to be able to correct it though.

and my final thought, if this website is supposed to be based on a community of herpers then why is the assumption that the "you own it, you wrote it." concept serves only to catch dishonest people in a lie, call out those that misrepresent themselves and their animals and any other form of malfeasance while keeping the edit function away from the honest people who bring no harm to the community. A parallel that can be seen is in the likes of gun control measures in places such as Chicago, where honest people are unable to arm themselves, yet criminals that do not follow the rule of law are able to freely run rampant throughout the city with little fear of reprisal from a unarmed citizenry. The criminals will still do bad no matter what and the laws intent is long lost in the facts of it's outcome.

*this thread is not aimed at anyone in particular, the intent is clearly to advocate a forum of thought.

I've edited a few spelling errors right after posting, but I know the edit tab doesn't stay up too long. I curious what the time span is on it.

I'm not sure what it's set to on here, but I believe the standard is 10 minutes or someone replies, whichever comes first.

I'm not sure what that has to do with being honest, but you can always pm one of us with the right links and we can fix that for you if they did change and are no longer viewable.

The time allocated to make an edit for spelling after posting a thread or making a post is 10 mins.... sometimes proof reading what you write can eliminate the need to edit.... not always, but it does help. And 10 mins seems to be a fair amount of time....

This really just comes down to personal opinion - the "You wrote it, you own it" approach is simply that. It's been in effect since day one and just over 2 years later it seems to work well.... it does help get an idea of a persons character, attitude, however you want to view it.... some good, some not so good.... but non of this seems to impede people's participation and input to the forum with their views, experiences and information they give to various topics.

yep- i use spell check too before i post. but just today i wrote "i wood"- instead of i would- and of course spell check doesnt do something..lol

but hey- we are all humans and make mistakes. and honestly i never witnessed grammar / spell check nazis here.

to top that: i actually like the "once u wrote it u own it" philosophy. i witness that a lot in other forums where people edit their posts after a while and u dont know anymore what really stood there and about what they were arguing. that pisses me more off.

im sure people would do that here too.
