View Full Version : Herpers, the movie.... Dave 12-22-2008, 10:45 AM Just saw this on Barczyks's site. http://www.bhbreptiles.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=15 Cheers, Quig 12-22-2008, 10:51 AM This is good and it's what we need. Mrs. Sputnik 12-22-2008, 11:06 AM Awesome & a positive for the industry NoahHart 12-22-2008, 11:21 AM It does look positive and I cant wait to see it. norsmis 12-22-2008, 12:34 PM I saw a few people I know on there!!!!! Tosha 12-22-2008, 12:58 PM http://jetpythons.com/headscratch.gif Got to admit I'm kinda torn -- whereas I think it's a neat idea -- I think things like the guy that was breeding a bunch of frogs in his dining room doesn't necessarily look all that great -- perhaps passionate but to the lay person just crazy. nwheat 12-22-2008, 01:08 PM How cool is that?! I can't wait! MarkS 12-22-2008, 01:19 PM I can't wait to see it myself. Dav is a friend of mine and I've known him for more then a dozen years, he's been involved with herps for as long as I've known him. He's a great guy and definitely a friend of the hobby. BTW: if you ever meet him, call him Dav (with a soft 'A' instead of a hard 'A' sound. He really loves that....) Buckskin 12-22-2008, 02:12 PM Looks like it could be an interesting movie. xanaxez 12-22-2008, 02:58 PM cant wait to see it myself, hopefully it will show alot of people out there when snakes are cared for properly they can make wonderful pets also. all people see these days are negative movies on them or someone being killed by one because of there own lack of better judgement and ignorance. JOHNS6068 12-22-2008, 03:00 PM It's a neat looking movie I'll give you that..But I gotta say It worries me some will only take away from this movie with $$$$ signs in thier heads after seeing it...... That's Just my 2 cents on it so far. jknudson 12-22-2008, 06:01 PM I think it'll be an interesting documentary. I agree with John, it better not just make non-herp people think they can make big $$$ keeping and breeding reptiles...we don't need an insurgence of those types of keepers...we already have our fair share around. Varanus99 12-22-2008, 06:05 PM Ill be looking forward to seeing it. Looks interesting to me. FloridaHogs 12-22-2008, 06:10 PM Looks interesting for sure. kare 12-22-2008, 06:10 PM I know Dav, too! Dav sold Scott his matriach albino bullsnake many moons ago. (She passed last year and was somewhere over the 12-14 year mark. She had a severe prolapse trying to lay 25 eggs.)We run into him at reptile meetings and different things here in the Twin Cities. I can't wait for the movie to release. At Tinley, he said it would have alot of editing done, as he took alot of footage. Tama 12-22-2008, 06:11 PM Something to look for this Spring. Will be very interested in getting a DVD of that. janeothejungle 12-22-2008, 10:43 PM I'll be looking out for it. But here is my beef..... Where are the chicks? There are quite a few of us out here living the herp life, but the trailer shows a bunch of dudes. Not trying to judge before I get to see it, and I hope it rocks (a la cane toads). But I have to seriously wonder if part of the divide between us and the lay public has to do with the ability to relate. For me personally, when I meet new people, I always get the "whoa, seriously? You're into what?" (I'm a short, blonde thing about as yuppie as they come) and then it opens a door to allow me to get people thinking about herps in different ways (ie we aren't all a bunch of teenage boys piling up aquariums in the basement). It just gave me pause. *done with the soapbox* If nothing else, I'll get the DVD just for the snake ****. Word. Cheers, Kat Chris 12-22-2008, 11:30 PM Cool preview. Cant wait to see how that turns out. 147BOAS 12-23-2008, 02:59 AM i cant wait to see it DanielA989 12-23-2008, 10:52 AM Definately good for the industry kare 12-23-2008, 02:40 PM I'll be looking out for it. At Tinley, I saw Dav filming Kara Glasgow (NERD) and the neighbor to our booth among others. (our neighbor had beardies - one was soooo friendly, he kept jumping from the chair and running over to me for some cuddle time. LOL) Desert 12-23-2008, 02:44 PM I'm a bit skeptical after watching it. Not that I won't watch it when it comes out, but it appears that profit potential was hyped in the short video which makes me cringe, especially in an economic recession where people are going to see this and be drawn in by it. Anyone with experience knows that the animals get the short end of the equation when someone new seeing $ signs, jumps in. My opinion is, a breeder who responds to solicitation to talk of that while being recorded for a movie is either a dilettante poser, or a fool, or both. Many of these videos seem dumbed down to me. Are producers so insecure about their audience's perception of reptiles that they feel the need to hype profit like in this movie? Or, upload mile after excruciating mile of footage of employees goofing around, getting snake-bitten on the nose and otherwise boring (at least me) to sleep? I'll probably hear derision for this, but a prime example are those snakebyte videos. They started off ok, then descended into being more about the 'crew' than the animals. I couldn't give a crap about the shirtless crew, myself. Videos of the crew dancing joking around and inducing animals to bite is to me, boring and unprofessional. Also cringe-worthy are videos where forceps are not used when feeding and thus causing the snake to often miss its strike because the food item is in the hand swinging in the air like a clock pendulum, by its tail. My unsolicited advice is to knock this silliness off and develop some more faith in yourselves as video/film producers. :) Rick247 12-23-2008, 02:45 PM Will give this a try when it comes out. AaronP 12-23-2008, 03:47 PM Holy shit slash from GNR is in it, I gotta see it now. Southern Wolf 12-23-2008, 04:37 PM I will definately be getting it... looks like it might be interesting.... now someone just lets me know when it hits the shelves. African Beast 12-24-2008, 02:28 AM Will be interesting. THE B African Beast 12-24-2008, 02:29 AM PS-Can everybody see that i have a infraction? Or is it just visible to me? Anyone with experience knows that the animals get the short end of the equation when someone new seeing $ signs, jumps in. Exactly my same thoughts...I'm surprised not to see more people commenting on this as well. The short clip talked about all this money that was made 7 digits and so on.... a guy flipping through this wad of cash...Not how I think the reptile industry needs to be viewed. Like some cash cow for getting your kids through college or so on. Rapture 12-24-2008, 03:31 AM The whole 7 digits quote made by Brian is still echoing in my brain, but hopefully the whole movie won't be focused that much on the money as much as the animals themselves and why they captivate people that keep them. skm0308 12-24-2008, 09:08 AM The whole 7 digits quote made by Brian is still echoing in my brain, but hopefully the whole movie won't be focused that much on the money as much as the animals themselves and why they captivate people that keep them. I agree, I hope they don't focus only on the money aspect, but I must admit I'm disappointed that they even discuss it. That automatically takes the focus off of the animals and people start seeing dollar signs. Desert 12-24-2008, 12:39 PM The solution seems simple enough; folks that know the producer could email him explain the reason and gently suggest he excise those portions of the movie. Tosha 12-24-2008, 01:10 PM I think the money is often used as a vehicle for "legitimizing" the industry - make it seem like it is a real business not a nickel and dime hobby. But it often comes off as a cash cow industry. I hope that we are portrayed well in the movie and not made to look like we are running snake mills in our basements. PS-Can everybody see that i have a infraction? Or is it just visible to me? The (BAD) B Yes everyone can see it :nono: |
