Traditionally every year my first field outing is to the pond across the road to find spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer). This year was no different.Such a rad little frog. I found a few of them. In particular this one very photogenic male with the broken up cross on his back that didn't have a bunch of briars and crap in between my camera and him.

Brings back memories of my younger years as I headed to my neighbors pond for spring peeper action. At the height there were over 1000 peepers and the sound was deafening. It was awesome. Do you see any Ambystoma sallies breeding?

I didn't see any snot lizards at all. I did hear a couple of leopard frogs calling though, which was kind of surprising. Seems a bit early for them.

The peepers were not quite out in full force yet. But you're right, here in a couple of weeks or so, I'll just about need earplugs if I go back over there.

And he even sang a tune for ya . Great pics.

I too had a pond across the street where I grew up. It was one that would dry up in late summer. I'd circle that thing several times a day and night, flash light and net (or jar) in hand, in season just to see what I could find. It was a great learning experience. Peepers, bull frogs, pickerl and leopard frogs. Egg clusters and tadpoles of all of the above at the right time. Tiger salamander larva, is that what they cal those? In the water, insect larva of many types, all kinds of microscopic organisms to view. And on shore all types of salamanders, garter and ribbon snakes, northern water snakes and an occasional masassagua rattle snake.

Oooops, I apologise for hijackin' you thread. I just get caught up in the memories sometimes. Good times

Nothing to worry about brother, You didn't hijack anything and it was a good read!

I'm glad I was able to help bring back some good 'ol memories for you.

When I was a kid there was a vernal pool out in the middle of the field behind my parent's house. I spent a lot of time out there catching tadpoles, mudpuppies, and crawdads back when I was just a little fledgling herper.

Your story brought those memories right back to me. Hey, birds of a feather...

The "old tadpole pond" is a memory for a lot of us......
