norsmis 04-10-2011, 05:18 PM :lmao: Hope you recover soon! :D Awesome pics!
Thanks Ron. Well, my breathing has started to return to normal and the cramping in my legs is starting to subside. It looks like I'll make a full recovery! Haha
Exciting hike. But that lizard looks rather irritated with you for interrupting it's sunbathing.
Is that a broad head skink or an old five-lined male skink? He looks great
Sputnik 04-10-2011, 07:07 PM Great shots - next time, so some thought for those that care about you and make them aware your going outside like that.... always let someone know your going hiking and where - what would of happened if you got lost?
haha! Sounds like me............my kinda field herping. I just can't find the time. Nice shots though.
Dan W 04-10-2011, 08:08 PM I love skinks and he is a beauty.
Dan
S.Gilbert 04-10-2011, 09:09 PM I hope you took a break before heading all the way back..... nice to have things close to home.

Yeah, it wasn't too thrilled with my presence.

I'm not sure. I think the broad heads have an orange head.

I knew that I wasn't going to get lost, I had my gps.

I was actually in the middle of something but had to try and get a pic.

Thanks Dan. It always amazes me how fast they are with those tiny legs.
I hope you took a break before heading all the way back..... nice to have things close to home.
I had to take a 2 hour nap after the whole excursion.
Mrs. Sputnik 04-10-2011, 09:56 PM Sit down and catch your breathe lol
I need to wipe the sweat from my brow first. Haha
I'm not sure. I think the broad heads have an orange head.
Male five-lined skinks do too, during breeding season. That's why I asked. His looks orange to me.
We don't have broad heads up here :(. I'd like to have one or two. They get bigger than five-lines do
In any case. He's a looker.
Oh, and DO rest up
I'll keep you in mind if I ever decide to try and catch one. Of course it might be dead or dying because those are the only slow ones.

Understood. They ARE quick. I've caught several five-lined up here and some have escaped me by losing a tail because I just wasn't quick enough to get a head or body grip. Out of curiousity, how long would you say that one was?
I would say it was 12 inches or more. That is a BIG log that it was on.

It was a broad head then . Five-lines max out at MAYBE 8 inches.
Thats what I was thinking, but I am not in any way a skink expert. Also I was thinking it was a female as the males have much bigger heads. Then again I could be wrong being as winded and my vision beginning to blur due to the strain that my body went through. :lmao:
I'm just callin' it a him. It could very well be a female.
If I can catch any this year I will certainly keep you in mind.

Thanks. Much appreciated.
Bigtattoo 04-11-2011, 04:45 AM That wore me out just reading about your excursion.
Nice shots, skinks are way up on my cool list. I hope they know better than to go into your tegu enclosures. :)
constrictorkeeper 04-11-2011, 08:29 AM skinky experience...
get well soon !

THAT would be an experience they'd not soon forget.
Dan W 04-11-2011, 09:47 PM I may be wrong here but I believe the males get red heads during breeding season and turn more of a golden brown color. I think the females retain the hatchling stripes but without the brightness and contrast.

For broad heads Dan? If so they're just a bigger version of the five-lined skink then
Dan W 04-12-2011, 06:25 AM Yeah for broad heads. The five lines are a smaller version but I am not sure how the five lined males look.
Dan
Hope you have made a full recovery from your trek! Great shots!
It has been extremely difficult but I am glad to say that I have made a full recovery and have been thinking of trying to go into the backyard this weekend. :lmao:

Dan
Dan, they look just like a broad head. Here's a fairly descent shot of my male.
