147BOAS 12-28-2008, 02:27 PM very week on the reptile radio show i hear you talk about closed air cages and open air cages whitch one do you think is better and gives you better out come at the end of a breeding season and is easyer to work with i think we shoud do a poll on it
FloridaHogs 12-28-2008, 03:42 PM I use open air for most of mine. Open air is great for animals thaat do not need a lot of humidity and if your ambiant temps are 75 to 80. I have one closed air and it holds humidity like crazy as well as general overall temps are a bit higher.
All of mine are racks (closed air) and I have had nothing but good luck with them. I have seen too many problems with some open air caging that as nice as it looksand would love to have some I will stick with my racks.....

Throw up a poll on it Andrew.... it's a good question!
Larry 12-28-2008, 05:18 PM I'm kind of still up in the air on the topic. It's seems the animals could feel the environment around them a little better with an "open air" rack but I honestly don't know or have the experience to back it up.
Phil has had great success with his closed racks so that says a lot. Phil do you cool your females?
Yea, I cool my snakes during breeding season. My room is in my basement so it cools down good in the winter. I dont heat my room and go more with heat in all the racks for the simple reason I hate working in a hot room. I use peg board on the back of my racks and I have holes burned in the boxes. When you talk about storms that stimulate breeding you are talking about barometric pressure and I dont think it matters what they are in for that. The thing I think is the biggest problem with respiratory problems is drafts and not so much cold temps and with the open tops makes drafts very possible......

how do i do a poll

I've only used closed air racks so that's one of the reasons we ask...We like to hear different opinions and others success rates...I've had decent success with closed air racks so you know the saying - If it ain't broke - Don't fix it...:yessir:
Wild Bill 12-28-2008, 09:51 PM I think both systems would work well. It also depends on your setup. If you have a dedicated snake room that you can control humidity in the open air system would work well. If you don't have a dedicated snake room you might have a larger issue controlling humidity levels in open air racks. Everyone has to try and do what is best for their situation. :yessir:
what are open air and closed air racks ?
sorry for sounding stupis
JChandler 12-28-2008, 10:10 PM what are open air and closed air racks ?

Open air racks like freedom breeders units or even aquariums with screen tops.
Or the built racks like out of melamine or plastic.
oh right
thanks
im new here :welcome:
Buckskin 12-28-2008, 10:25 PM I have 2 open racks and 10 Closed racks. I believe the animals have done better in the closed rack systems. Just my opinion.

No issues, valid question new or not....
I personally don't have any preference in the matter since I believe that it is barometric pressure related and I don't think it will matter...maybe they can feel the cool setting in quicker in an open air rack but not that much sooner IMO...
People have good luck with both set ups, stick with what works best.
i personaly would prefer closed air racks
i i think you would be risking an ri in an open air one
but saying that if the temps in your romm are constantly 80-84 i think you wou;d be fine
WinstonHS 12-28-2008, 11:02 PM In my OPINION I personally think other than temps and humidity it does not affect the animals. I think they feel the environment around them either way.
147BOAS 12-29-2008, 03:13 AM we need to start a poll how do you start a poll
beclende 12-29-2008, 03:24 AM we need to start a poll how do you start a poll
LMAO:lmao: agreed.............
beclende 12-29-2008, 03:30 AM I like the idea of the closed air personally........much easier for me to maintain my temps during the winter.
rbchesapeakebal 12-29-2008, 11:09 AM We have both, I think it's easier to control the humidity in the closed racks.
Rich
Larry Petty 12-29-2008, 11:22 AM I have AP, RBI, and Vision racks. I would almost consider the Vision to be open air and I HATE them this time of year. Even with cypress mulch, I cannot keep the humidity up. I like my closed racks WAY better.
Very interesting...Thanks for all the input guys...
I'm with Larry Petty, on this during the dry Months up here in Michigan I found that putting Amico Board on Top of each lvl of Freedom breeders works great. Its a thin layer of Insulated dense foam Board , its easy to cut to size and gets the temps good and the drafts out and the Humity In. But I too like my Closed air racks better. Happy New Year EveryOne.

147BOAS 12-30-2008, 12:07 AM i am going to see if i can start a poll on this and see how it goes
