View Full Version : Security measures?

Lately I've found myself reluctant to talk about my collection at work just on the off chance that someone I work with might mention it to someone who wouldn't have a problem with breaking in if they thought they could get a decent amount of money for it.

I'm just kind of curious what kind of security measures, if any, everyone out there takes with their collections. Do you just rely on security through obscurity and hope no scumbags nearby find out about it? Home alarm system? Locks on the door to the herp room?

People know I have snakes but not many really know how much they're worth. I have 2 dogs inside and one in the front yard... the one in the front is a good watch/guard dog and one of the dogs inside as well. Then there's the husky... and he's just a big fuzzy people dog, but it helps that he looks like a "wolf."

I don't tell people about there value. If you go around telling people about valuables you have in your house. Your asking to get robbed. I would love to see a robbers faces that breaks into my house. Looks for valuables in the drawers in my snake room. LOL

I have a husky too....she would probably follow the crooks around the house and then leave with them after they took all of my things. Even so she is a good dog.

I have the dog and the guns....the dog is hit or miss...kind of a sissy german shepard.

Mainly I don't let alot of people know exactly where I live...UPS box for my addy for most of my shipping so the addy that is out there is not here.

Not one of my 3 neighbors has any concept of what I have here and the area that I'm in isn't exactly high crime but if I do get robbed it probably won't be for the snakes....that will just be the added surprise for any one willing to risk it.

I do believe in torture as a form of punishment so if your close and catch someone give me a call and I will come and help you out...I will even bring some stuff...

I don't discuss my collection with anyone in my area. Mainly because there are no herpers near me and I try to avoid the endless repetitive questions that are always asked but also I just don't want people to know what I do. I've lived where I do for 10 years and my next door neighbors still don't know I have snakes in the house.
I also allow VERY few people to come to my house. Off hand I can think of six, and four of them live out of state, all friends who I trust.
If someone relatively local wants to pick something up to avoid shipping, I meet them somewhere.
Aside from that I have guns as well, but they're only useful if you're home, otherwise they're just something extra to steal.

I only own a few, and none of those are black market hot so I don't worry much. I live in a town with 1200 population " in the summer" so most everybody knows I own reptiles. For a while I even had a near endless parade of school kids, friends of my boys, come through the house. There ARE a couple of those I won't allow in the house again once I learned they had sticky fingers. Have even taken in a rescue from someone who heard through the grapevine that I keep. I even went to city hall to ask about restrictions as at one time I had a burm and an afrock. Was told not to worry :wamma: I'm small time so I guess I just don't sweat it yet.

I live on a Norman Rockwell street. Everyone is very normal. Planting flowers, kids playing ball, sayin' Hi to a neighbor named Fred. Very normal.

I dont have high dollar animals. But I keep it quiet because I like to stay under the radar. I just think its better that way. Only a few people close to me know I have anything.

Since getting into the high value stuff I've found that I don't talk about the snakes as much as I used to probably why I find myself chatting more on the internet about them then in real life -- even a lot of the kids I've stopped letting in the snake room. I absolutely do not tell anyone the value of the snakes -- but I've notice hubby does (kinda his justification for having them I guess).

Our complex has security cameras so you can't get in or out without being seen. We have a dog -- she's medium sized and will bark, she jumps and scratches and mouths anyone that comes into the house sometimes piddles on their shoes - not exactly a "guard dog" but a step up from our previous dog - a husky ;)

Aside from that it's extremely rare that someone isn't home and the snake room has a lock and an alarm on it -- there's a lot more expensive stuff just sitting out in the house to take than the snakes - but I guess if they are looking for snakes :nono:

And lastly everything is insured -- it would sadden us to loose our pets but on the financial end at least we are covered.

Im locked and loaded.

Herp room has a different lock than the rest of the house. Later this year... I plan on getting a WDB and housing it next to the door. My mentor has one...and EVERYTIME the herp door opens... it goes into Buzzin mode.

Most folks aren't gonna stop to find it... only slam the door and run.

2 killer chihuahuas(loudest little ankle bitters on the block), and a 38 special. When I get my building up in running I do believe a home security system and plenty of outdoor lighting will be set up(the motion sensor type).

My neighbors/landlords are close friends...they are both retired, and usually around to keep an eye on my house.

They are also hunters, and have more guns than I do snakes, LOL...Colorado has a 'make my day' law as well...so basically I don't worry too much about anyone breaking in my house...

I myself, keep an assortment of knives and reproduction swords around the house...decorative and useful:D

But the only thing that will do anything is the Pit.... cause the Colt 45 is just the beer he feeds the pit.

We've got the alarm, the AR-15 and the bengal who dislikes strangers. He jumped on my sisters back one night when she came down to get her laundry. I also don't go around bragging about what I've got in my collection to people I don't know or trust. Even those people don't know about everything that's in the collection.
