View Full Version : Any good tricks?
HiImSteveDuh 05-30-2011, 07:15 PM I have a 2010 female western that for the life of me, will not eat. Ive tried live mice, ASF, all the normal options. But I remember a reptile radio episode talking about getting stuborn hoggies to eat, but can't remember which episode. So what are some good tricks for impossible feeders?
Dan W 05-30-2011, 07:18 PM Has it ate on its own before and if so what? When did it last eat and what are the cage conditions like?

It ate for the original seller. Hasn't eatin in a couple of months now since Ive gotten it. They would deli cup feed it overnight, which I've had no luck with. I keep it on aspen in a 6 quart. Pretty generic set up.
Ozz465 05-30-2011, 07:48 PM tried brain yet?? so far all my hogs will take that cept 1 that unfortunately never fed and died.
StudentoftheReptile 05-30-2011, 08:34 PM - Mushed-up Reptomin aquatic turtle food smeared on the pinky

You beat me to it!
If I may add something to that,
If all else fails, and the snake absolutely will not eat, just go in the backyard, find an appropriate sized toad/frog and feed her. May not be the cleanest, safest route, but hey it's better than losing the snake.
Ozz465 05-30-2011, 08:41 PM Nver got any of the last 2 to work but besides brained i did get a bite on salmon scent and frog.

I have heard of salmon working...
I also heard from a guy at an expo that the "juice" from canned SPAM will also work.
I haven't tried it, I just heard it works...:dunno:
kingsnake1 05-31-2011, 08:50 AM I have always had great luck with Tuna juice. I've even had them drink tuna juice out of the can. Good luck.
FloridaHogs 05-31-2011, 04:21 PM Hav you tried a live pink? Some really need th movement to get the feeding response to kick in
XSReptiles 05-31-2011, 06:26 PM 1 of mine was alittle more stubborn at feeding when i first for my 2. Brent @ superconda recommended I place it with a pinky in a deli cup over night. I did it successfully several times till became a more aggressive feeder.

I've done the same but in a small paper bag stapled shut at the top. Dark and confined overnight has worked very well for me. Only a couple times on hogs, but I couldn't even count how many times on other baby snakes.
HiImSteveDuh 05-31-2011, 08:38 PM Yea, ive tried live and frozen in bags, delicups, ect.
And yes, I believe it was the reptomin trick that I heard before on RR! Thanks! Ill go give it a shot.
Fishfreak2407 05-31-2011, 08:58 PM and then sometimes they just wont eat until they are ready!??!,:dunno: they can really be finicky even with your best efforts, and then the switch is thrown, and nomnomnom, good luck and dont let it drive you crazy:nono:

Here's a link to my post about it. http://www.reptileradio.net/reptileradio/showthread.php?t=21755
I've also tried: canned sardine, green tree frog, toad, turtle scent, and other stuff. I like to take a live pink, rub it all over the scenting items then put the snake and scented item in a small deli cup overnight.
If it's really being a pain try getting a small tub (smaller than a 6 quart) tape up the sides and top (on outside) drill some small air holes in it. Keep the animal in there for a week or so with water. I put a small area of the tub over the heat on my 6 qt rack. Only check on it every few days. After a week try putting a live pinky in it. The idea it to leave it alone in a small dark place for some time so it won't stress.
If the above doesn't work and it's losing weight it's time to start force feeding it.
I hope that helps.
karlh 06-01-2011, 06:30 AM Different things work for different people I guess. My favourite is tinned salmon, I have I believe ' security ' plays a big role in this. I place my hog / hogs, in a small container with a hide and plenty of substrate. I always provide fresh water and keep the temperature high. I leave them like this for a few days without disturbing them.
Then I offer them a lump of salmon stored in my frezzer and defrost a small piece everytime I run into feeding difficulties.
I then rub it on the pinkie, usually, it works.
Hope this helps.
