What kind of moss do you use in your moist hide? Anyone use beaked moss?

When I kept leos, I kept Sphagnum moss in the humid hides.

I used vermiculite in the humid hides. When I saw all the vermiculite pushed to one end of the container I new one of the girls layed eggs. Every couple of days I would have to spray the vermiculite to rehydrate, but worked well.

I use sphagnum moss. I prefer the long strand kind when I can find it. The ground up stuff gets everywhere when females are laying and is a mess. You end up losing a lot of it because the females keep kicking it all over the place. I tried vermiculite a few years back but the females would eat the stuff and one of them ended up getting really sick. I almost lost her but she eventually bounced back. Couldn't breed her that year because of it and it was my first year producing snows so I ended up with only one Super Snow that season (which of course I held back). Pissed me off not having any Super Snows for sale that year but what can you do :)

I found some long strand "new Zealand" sphagnum moss. Stupid expensive, but looks like it will go a loooooong way.

I use spaghnum moss also. Not to hijack your thread but I see no need to start a new thread for this. How often do you guys replace the moss in the moist hide?

Immediately if they use it for their toilets or it starts to mold. Other then that its a feel type of thing. When it no longer holds moisture and begins to breakdown (the long strand stuff) I replace it. With the dirt kind of moss I've only been using it for about a two months. I don't even have to worry about it getting old because the kick they sh$# out so fast its like I'm replacing it every week.

If you cut the hole in the top of the container you won't get as much moss spread out in your cage. You just have to use a container that they can climb up on.

I use Bed-A-Beast myself. Moss suppliers here are few and far between and when I can find it , its usually pricey.

My holes are at the top of the containers, maybe I'll post pics of my setup once I get back from Miami. Really doesn't matter with that dirt moss, the females still manage to kick some out when they are about to lay. At the end of the day tho anything that will hold moisture will work so use whatever works for you is what I always say.
