View Full Version : Another first!
FloridaHogs 06-27-2011, 10:11 AM At least for me :D I raised this female and her mate up from hatchlings, and this was my first year to to breed Cali Kings. I do not know what a good clutch size is, but I can't complain with six good looking large eggs. :) Dad is a banded ruby eye.

norsmis 06-27-2011, 10:15 AM Congrats Jenea! Those ruby eyes are awesome!
FloridaHogs 06-27-2011, 10:23 AM Thanks guys. So is that an average clutch size? A good first clutch? Having never bred these, I was surprised at how big the eggs are! I am use to hoggie and corn eggs....

For a first time girl I would say yes. I never usually got more than 15 from mine and those were seasoned girls. The hatchlings come out HUGE too!
FloridaHogs 06-27-2011, 10:28 AM Awesome, thanks Ron!

Scott's mature cal kings lay between 12-20. Have fun with all the babies when they hatch. They're a lot of fun, for pooping machines, that is.
Buckskin 06-27-2011, 09:25 PM Congrats Jenea, looks like some healthy eggs.
Congratulations Jenea! And yes, that is a good number for her first clutch! They look great, and yes, they do look huge when you're used to the corn and hog eggs, lol!!!
(Check general colubrids, I had some eggs that blew me away!)
Kuehnemund 06-27-2011, 11:22 PM congrats on the eggs!!! I am not sure about cali kings, but I got a corn that just dropped 18 good eggs, small but fertile!

Good Luck!!

guyergenetics 06-28-2011, 09:11 AM Six is a good clutch size for first year Cals. This is the second year for mine and all of mine gave me 8-10, so that's probably what you can expect next year. And Big Congrats on the successful breeding!
I had one that I pulled eggs from this morning that gave me 14 huge eggs and it was her second year, rather surprising. She now looks rather deflated, lol!
FloridaHogs 06-29-2011, 12:49 AM Poor thing. Hey, do they double clutch like other colubrids?
Just like them, sometimes they do, sometimes not, and last years results were a high number of slugs with the seconds that went.
guyergenetics 06-29-2011, 12:06 PM Yes they do. Keep a close watch in about 5-6 weeks or so. Some of mine have already layed second clutches of good eggs this season without having a male reintroduced.
a153fish 07-16-2011, 12:04 PM Good luck! There is a possibillity that you get all double hets, if the parents aren't of the exact same strain. That just happened to some one on another site. He was pretty confused about the whole ordeal, and so were many of us. Congratulations on the clutch!
