View Full Version : Vivarium Electronics VE-300 Thermostat
adrianbryce 07-08-2011, 12:07 PM Hey all,
Has anyone here ever heard of or used one of these thermostats?

ThunderPaws 07-08-2011, 12:45 PM I have not used it...I have heard of it. I personally use Spyder Robotics Herpstat and Herpstat ND. The model you are referring to would be identical to the Herpstat ND. I personally would not want such a bulky big control box. I hang my thermostat control units on the wall and out of the way. This unit would need a flat area to set it on and I don't have a bit of room for something like that. Plus Dione is the best with Customer Service and he will basically take care you for the life of his thermostats......

Robyn@SYR 07-08-2011, 06:42 PM Outstanding thermostat, the 300 model is fully featured, including switchable between on/off and proportional.
Made by a reptile company, really well designed both visually and functionally.
tyler.beez 07-09-2011, 04:22 PM i have a ve-300 and a couple herpstat nd's i really like them both. I think both are quality products the ve-300 is made by reptile basics. i will say that i like the herpstats alarm system better as you have more range of control over high and low alarms, and you can set temps at tenths of degrees with the herpstat which you cant with the ve. They are both about the same price and i feel that purchasing either would be a good investment. i will say that i prefer the herpstat a little over the ve because of the reasons i listed. but besides that their both about the same.
SloanReptiles 07-10-2011, 02:14 AM We have a VE-200 that is great, it works very well, definitely like it over Helix thus far, I would imagine the 300 would be even better!
norsmis 08-14-2011, 02:20 PM I just ordered the VE-200. I will post an update once I get it set up and running for a while. I have seen a lot of good reviews for them so far.
Limey 08-19-2011, 08:26 PM I have a total of 4 so far of these... I love them.. simple to use and they stack.. shocking not to have stats hanging off racks!

norsmis 08-19-2011, 08:36 PM I set mine up today and I like it so far. It is very simple to use and I like the fact that it sits on top of the racks.
adrianbryce 08-20-2011, 10:22 PM well that settles it. my next purchase is gonna be a VE-300.
Limey 08-21-2011, 09:31 AM I can alway bring these stats to any of the shows I work on the East coast. As Rich lives less than 2 miles from me saves on shipping.

starsnake 08-21-2011, 06:02 PM I have a VE-200 on my home made incubator this year. Did a beautiful job. Had no problems.
AdamTrioxin 08-21-2011, 06:14 PM I'm planning on ordering the VE-200 or the 300 this week, was on the fence not knowing too much about them but so far i've seen only good comments.
Damage, Inc. 08-31-2011, 09:09 PM I am going to order the VE-200 for my new animal plastics rack. I have seen nothing but good feed back.
AdamTrioxin 09-06-2011, 04:07 PM Just a quick update, I did order the VE-200 and have been using it for a couple of weeks now.
My initial review would be it does what it's supposed to, it works like you would expect, easy to setup, and I've not had to really mess with it. I do like the design it sets really nicely on top of my incubator instead of having it hang somewhere.
My only concerns could be seen as nit picking but here they are, #1 I did lose power for about 2mins the first day I had the VE-200 and while the internal battery did save my temp settings it does not save the clock, nothing major really. #2 And this one could be more of personal preference than anything, the VE-200 only allows for changes in whole degrees. I also have a Herpstat ND and I really like being able to control down to a tenth of a degree. Again nothing major and it could just be a personal preference kind of thing.
Overall I'm happy with the VE-200, It's setting on top of my incubator and if it wasn't in plain sight I would have probably forgot about it .
norsmis 09-06-2011, 05:23 PM I have had mine up and running for a few weeks also and I have no complaints! Easy to set up and like Adam said, I like the way it sits on top of the racks. As long as this baby stays running strong over the next few months, I will be replacing another aging thermo with one of the VE-200s!
BryGuy 09-10-2011, 04:18 PM Do these have the ability to run multiple probes/temp zones? I like the design.
Azo Reptiles 10-04-2011, 05:33 PM The VE300 X2 is now available. It's 2 Ve300's in 1 frame. My friend is running 1 and he loves it. Set up on 1 ARS 7030 and 1 ARS 7010 as both his helix's died within a week.
We use a combo of Ve100's and Ve200's. Plan to add some Ve300's as well. All work great and we have zero issues with any of them.
RyanGSP 10-07-2011, 01:07 AM I use the VE-200 on my boa cage stack and love it. I have 24" of 11" heat tape running from front to back on one side of the cages each cage with a separate plug. Those are all plugged into a power Bar (Cheap from Walmart) and that is plugged into the VE-200.
I chose this model over a Helix or Herpstat because of the price and because its very streamline on my cages. I dont need to hang it, it sits right on the top and has an easy to read display. At night I can read it while I shovel the walk if I want to.
Im not sure if they have them or not but I would really like to see a longer Probe cord. I would have all these stacked on a shelf if I could get probe cords that went right across my reptile room.
Here are some crappy iPhone pics when I first set it up.

Chris633 10-24-2011, 09:54 AM I also have 2 VE-200's and am very happy. They have been holding temps great. A friend is also using one for his incubator and has been very happy.
anendeloflorien 10-24-2011, 10:24 AM I needed a quick, semi-cheap thermostat for my quarantine rack so I picked one of thenve-100s up at the last show I went to and it is freaking awesome! Temps are rock solid, it's wicked easy to set up (even my girlfriend could figure it out and she's very technologically challenged lol) and it just works! I think I'll be getting a ve-300x2 for my new baby/juvenile racks I'll be setting up next year.

You can get just about any length probe cords for them from rich, or you can make your own! I know a guy that has 6 of the ve-300x2s set up to run his entire snake room, he's got em all in one stack and probe cords running to each rack, it works great!
RyanGSP 10-24-2011, 11:41 PM Ill have to check that out, thanks Adam!
kratton 02-08-2012, 03:51 PM I have two of the VE 300 thermostats. Absolutely love them. The built in night drop and overall accuracy is great!
quality serpents 02-19-2012, 01:41 PM Just got the VE-200 for my homemade incubator and I love how easy it is to use. I also love how it sits neatly on top of the incubator and the backlit display is a plus for me. I am wondering about the readout in whole degrees business. I know that it only reads out in whole degrees, but since it's proportional and never shuts off, only increases or decreases power, I'm wondering if it only senses whole degrees or if it is keeping it closer than the readout is able to display.:dunno:
RyanGSP 02-19-2012, 02:13 PM Shane these are not proportional thermostats they are either on off or pulse. I believe RBI is releasing one that is proportional but to my knowledge its not on the market yet.

OK. The box says pulse proportional thermostat. I didn't know there was a difference in pulse proportional and just plain proportional.
RyanGSP 02-19-2012, 04:15 PM Pulse porportional is just that the ve will pulse faster or slower depending how much power the tape needs to achieve the desired temp.
Regular porportional will always have power to the heat tape just at a reduced amount to achieve desired amount.

OK. So now back to my original question. Since the VE is pulse proportional, is it actually maintaining the temp to closer than 1 full degree variance and only able to display it to the whole degree or is there actually a full degree of swing in temps?
RyanGSP 02-19-2012, 05:10 PM Ive never seen that big of a swing. Ive checked my tape multiple times and if its set at 91 degrees my tape has always been 90.9-91.1.
quality serpents 02-19-2012, 05:21 PM In addition to the ve probe I also have the temp probe from my digital aqautics reefkeeper elite module in there. I've only had it on now for almost 24 hours and the reefkeeper so far is recording fluctuations of only about .2 degrees. I hope that keeps up.
snakewrangler 02-28-2012, 07:30 AM I ordered the VE-300X2. Should be here tomorrow. I'll post up a report when I am done setting it up.
