View Full Version : I always wanted on of these...
Kuehnemund 07-11-2011, 10:13 PM After listening to the RR episodes with Tyler Stewart from Tortoise Supply, I have always wanted a baby sulcata. It just took me this long to get my parents convinced, but I finally got him...
This little guy eats like there is no tomorrow!!

I picked this little guy up at my local expo in Taylor, Michigan. He/She was produced by Michael Wood over at Woodland Exotics, he was a lot of help, he answered all my questions, overall a great guy!!
Thanks Michael!!

Thanks,
Ya I can't wait...When I bought him i was told not to be alarmed if he hides for a few weeks because it will take time for him to get used to his new home...
ThunderPaws 07-11-2011, 11:24 PM That is an awesome Tortoise. I would love one too...We just have no room.....Nice pickup.

Justin, they eat so much so they can get BIG!!! :D. I've always wanted a tortoise of some sort too but I can't handle something that'll get 70 plus pounds as an adult. I've had my eye on hinge-backs for ever but haven't made the move yet.

Don't worry Quig I am well aware of what this little beasty will become...I think you would really enjoy a Testudo type of tort (russians, greeks, hermans, etc.) but if your looking for something medium sized, you could go with a redfoot...
I like the hinge-backs too, but you have to be careful because all the ones ive seen were WC, and probably full of parasites.
although I didn't get my tort from Tyler his site is packed with info on many tort species, but hinge-backs arn't there and his prices are great too!

Thanks, I understand your issue with space, but if you just get one you should be able to keep it indoors during the cold months then outside during the warmer months...that is still a lot of space to dedicate to one animal...

I've heard the same thing about hinge-backs being parasite laden. Have also heard that with diligence and time the parasites can be eliminated. It's too bad no one has taken the time to carry them far enough to get captive born stock to work from.
As far as other brands, I'm a stickler for West African reptiles for some reason. The only things I own that aren't West African, or local, are a Blood and a Salmon Pastel BCI.

I totally agree about clearing up the parasites, but I've heard a few breeders say that when importing sometimes it is better for the animal to just deal with the parasites instead of trying to treat them, do to stress and feeding issues...
Maybe you could get a few hinge-backs and make some CBB ones to help refuel the limited stock of CBB ones...I saw some at the expo that looked pretty nice and the price was right! I just don't want to deal with the parasites, plus I would feel bad if the poor thing went belly up do to the parasite treatments...
