View Full Version : Bad Egg?

I traded some hatchlings for an adult ghost female last weekend and when I got home I felt a hard spot inside of her. She is around 2500g and the hard spot is about the size of a cue ball. Its located in the rear half of her body. I have quite a few ball pythons and I've never felt anything like this in any other snake, even when feeling for follicles. Could it be a bad egg? Any ideas of what it is and what to do about it would be greatly appreciated.

could be a large piece of urate? if you really feel uncomfortable about it...have her x-rayed.

List goes something like this:
Tumor
Packed urate crystals (although cue ball is pretty big for that)
Hardened egg that never made it out
Old infection. Lots of possibilities there, but egg yolk peritonitis is one
Anything that causes abnormal calcification. Hyperparathyroidism, kidney dz, there are others.
Best thing to do is take her to your vet. Maybe they will take radiographs, maybe ultrasound, this would also be a case where bloodwork might help.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Do you guys think its something that needs immediate attention or do you think it would be ok to wait and see what happens with it?

Depends on how much you like to gamble. I would say if you had more history on her, I might find some reason to wait. Not knowing her history though, I'd just go ahead and take her. Better safe than sorry.

I would have to agree with the general consensus.. I would rather take my snake to the vet and find out I didn't need to bring her in than stay home and find out too late that I should have.
