Hi everyone. I am new to this site, but like what I see here. Not only am I new to the site but am new to snakes too. I find Hognose to be one of my favorite and want to get into them. I will be building my rack soon. My question is if quality is going to be over quantity then what do I get? I am going to have about $800-$1,000 for snakes and I am going into this with breeding in mind. I find it very rewarding first getting eggs then babies (with my geckos). I have taken some time researching Hognose and feel that they are a good chose for me. I am thinking females now and then next year picking up the males to go with the females. Or is there a better way to go about this? Maybe older snakes I don’t know?. One other thing is I am only looking for a small # of snakes to start, 3 or 4 females maybe 2 males. I am looking for quality not quantity. What I am looking for is a little guidance. Thank you EvanK

Welcome. What Hognose morphs do you like? Are there any morphs you really want at some point?
Dan
well I love Toffee, I was going to look into maybe 100% hets, of them. I like the cream look to them. After breeding I would like to move up from there. Maybe some green or yellow too. I was going to get into Ball Pythons but I think this is a much cooler snake for me. There just isn't the info out there for me to get into with Hognoes to see how the markets are and things. I just want to get a good start.
Just looking at the amount you've got to spend and the numbers you are looking at, you may want to start with something in the pink or green pastels or just good clean pretty normal adult females. They aren't cheap, but if you have a good eye you can get some really pretty adult normal gals without breaking the bank, and then spend some more next year for visual males. Breed, get hets, grow up, get visuals. The biggest thing is to make sure that you are choosy about the ones you get.
Evan, you don't list what state you are in, but check to be sure you can have hognose. There are several states, Illinois and Iowa for example, where you can not have them without at least a permit.

Hello Even,
I'd recommend getting females first. Visuals are always nice but for the price point you said you'll have a hard time getting any visual females (other than albinos) for under $1K.
One idea may be to get some het females this year and get matching visual males next year. You could pick up a couple 100% het female morphs for under $1K.
