View Full Version : Het Albino Paradox
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 02:52 PM I got this female from a Normal x extreme, and she is incredible. I think its an het albino paradox, and i just hope its something genetic thats breedable, because that could just be awesome. I held back a male from the same clutch, and one more female. There were some crazy stuff in that clutch. I have 7 eggs in the incubator from the same mother and father, i hope something exciting will pop up.
Let me hear your opinion about this girl, and what creature she is :D.
Enjoy "Braveheart"

Rextiles 09-05-2011, 03:07 PM That is now the second hognose like that I have seen. Chad Fuchs produced such an animal in 2010. It has the same half Amelanistic, half Wild Type face although his shows a lot of Amelanistic leakage throughout the body as well. He called his a Calico although I think it is more or less a paradoxical trait most likely being non-reproducable as well. He hasn't posted any progress of his "Calico" since he first posted about it a year ago. :(
FloridaHogs 09-05-2011, 05:46 PM If it is from a normal x extreme red where does the albino come in? Albino gene has to be in there somewhere in order for it to be het albino....

I presumed that he meant "Extreme Red Albino" just based on the "extreme" tag and of course him stating that it was het Albino regardless of the paradoxing features. :dunno:
-off topic rant-
Of course I don't agree with the way that the Extreme Red tag is often overused/misused by many, especially when people label something as "het Extreme Red Albino" which is basically false considering that the "Extreme Red" coloration is a polygenic line trait and not part of the Albino trait. It can be Extreme Red het Albino, but that animal better exhibit Extreme Red coloration to be labeled as such. There is no such heterzygous form for the Extreme Red line as this is not a Mendelian trait but is instead a polygenic line trait. People need to understand and be more clear when using these names.

and thus the confusion. When I see extreme, I think extreme red, not extreme red albino.
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 06:13 PM Excatly, it is an extreme red albino the father, my mistake. Its difficult for some people to understand the extreme red label, and thats a shame.
Thank you for the replies.
Rextiles: I would love to see that snake. My female has some very small patches of albinism around the body, but so small that my camera cant catch it. :)
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 06:15 PM When i speak about my extreme red albino male with friendgeaks, i just say extreme, thats why i wrote it :)

Why would you say "Its difficult for some people to understand the extreme red label"?
Extreme Red by definition does not refer to an albino, but to the extreme red line.
FloridaHogs 09-05-2011, 06:22 PM Ahhh...ya beat me to the answer...
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 06:27 PM Ive talked to several people when selling hognoses. I made 3 clutches of extreme red albino x normal last year. Loads of people think when they breed extreme red albinoes to normals, that extreme red het albino will come out. And thats just not true. You can get some of the animals very beautiful red, but not the same intensity. As you say, its only the extreme red line it referes to, not the albino gene, its two different thinks, and its difficult for some people to figure out.
Hope i made it clear - what i meant. :)

Caveat: These are not my pictures; they were originally posted by Chad Fuchs, I believe on KS back in 2010. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find the original post on KS (go figure ) therefore I am merely hosting these pictures so that you can see what was originally shown:

Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 06:39 PM That animal looks amazing. You can see much more randome albino spots. Thank you. :)
Its seems that the normal part of the body is more darker, wich gives it more contrast.
Rextiles 09-05-2011, 06:48 PM Thank you. :)
You are very welcome! :)

Yeah, Chad's "Calico" is a very interesting specimen. I would love to see some recent pictures of it but unfortunately, Chad rarely posts on public forums. :(
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-05-2011, 06:50 PM It could be interesting to breed my female to his male! But again, i dont believe its genetic.

It usually isnt, but then again, it is always worth a shot at proving it out... Awesome little snake you got there...
GregBennett 09-05-2011, 07:54 PM Nice. Good luck with it.
Dan W 09-05-2011, 09:39 PM Very interesting animal. Good luck with the breedings.

BerlinHogs 09-07-2011, 08:26 AM Hi Lasse...this one is sooooooooo crazy!
Congratulation for hatching such a cool hog!!!
Lasse K. Carlsen 09-18-2011, 03:24 PM Thank you very much Dan and Stefan, im so excited about the little projekt. If its not genetic, its still a crazy hogg :)
Adamanteus 09-30-2011, 09:24 AM Thank you very much Dan and Stefan, im so excited about the little projekt. If its not genetic, its still a crazy hogg :)
Well it is not reproducible as a genetic trait....It does have a genetic explanation. The animal has two different genetic profiles. It is a chimera. Look at like two fraternal twins all mixed together.
When you have identical twins a single embryo splits and becomes two. With a chimera two fraternal twins merge and become a single animal with two genetic profiles.
It stands to reason that most chimera are not noticed because the profiles to not express different phenotype.
Sadly, the animal can pass on one genetic profile or the other....but not the chimera effect. ...and that is a real shame because they are so interesting.
Rextiles 09-30-2011, 05:26 PM Thanks for sharing that bit of knowledge about chimeras Adamanteus!
Lasse K. Carlsen 10-01-2011, 04:46 AM Thanks, thats a shame, it could have been fun to try to inhance the look by breeding.
