Just had a Kimberly rock dig a burrow and back into it. That usually means its egg laying time.

But I have been wrong before with these guys. They are tough. She KINDA looks gravid. This one is a maybe. But she is going through the motions so we shall see.

I fired up the incubator just in case.

Fngers and toes crossed, people! Thats an order! :yessir:

You'll be the first.

Well the second. My neighbors will probably figure it out when Im on the roof screaming "YES YES YES!! I AM THE LIZARD KING!! I CAN DO ANYTHING!!!"

That usually tips them off.

Well things didnt go according to plan but something interested happened. Not a total loss.

This is usually what happens prior to egg laying.

They bask more often
They eat heavily and then when they get very close they stop
They do test digs
They get a little more fiesty

Then when they pick a good spot, they dig the burrow, finish it, back into it, lay the eggs and the cover them up. This usually takes 24-48 hours.

This lizard dug a real nice burrow, backed into it, was down for a while...then she got out and turned around I caught her head first again. Then she covered the hole.

Now, whenever they cover the hole I know I have eggs in there. If the holes is open then its either a test nest or just monitors digging for the hell of it. But they dont purposely cover holes. Not as a rule.

Plus, when I went in to check she was nasty. Very rare for her. She actually inflated her throat at me. Never did that before.

I go to dig up the eggs and no eggs. And believe me I looked EVERYWHERE. I even checked under the kitchen sink. Ya never know.

So this is very strange. She exhibited all the behaviors of a nesting monitor but didnt lay any eggs. First time for me. If I had to guess...I might guess that she dropped a few infertiles and ate them. She could have done that when she went head first back into the holes. But then why would she cover an empty hole? Pure instinct at work?

I think something happened. Because she went in fairly pudgy and came out skinny and ravenous. Another sign that eggs have been laid.

In truth, I am not exactly sure what happened. But I have no eggs. Dammit. These Kimmies are tough. But I shall prevail.

You mark my words...I will post pics of hatchling Kimmies on this very forum. I Guaran-F'N'tee it! And thats all I got to say about that!

Stay tuned, true believers.

Dont know man.I have seen my kimmies fill a empty hole.
Also have seen them drop a lower clutch then i expected and eat them, then burry the hole back up!!!:machinegun:
Just my 2 cents man!
Regardless Kimmies seem to be the most picky SOB's out there when it comes to egg laying.I believe we talked about that on the phone?
And just a side observation.Took me 3 males to finally get a viable clutch for 2 females.
Dont know if Frank or anyone has ever noticed that.Just seems a lil weird to me.
Regardless,good luck man.
I call dibs on extra hatchlings that are not being held back also.

Ok then Im not the only one who has observed this. I feel a little better. I had a hunch I might have a so-so male.

I call dibs on your guys. If I can figure out this egg thing maybe we can swap bloodlines. Get a little fresh blood in there.

Got them seperated at the moment.Only down to 1.1......
1rst of febuary they are going back in with eachother. If it dosnt work we can switch out the males no problem.
Keep this in mind though.
There is good luck with males grapling for the females in quite a few varanids that win the females effection.
When i was having bad luck with the Savs i tried this method.
Ill be damned if the losing male did not walk away and the winner went and did his thing with a normaly non receptive female!
Would that help with kimmies??????
i dont know!

Ive read that as well. Im still kinda feelin' out these kimmies. They are different than any other varanid that I have kept.

I have 1.2. They are 2 years old this past Nov. So far I had a clutch of 5 eggs laid in a nest box that was too wet. My fault, that one might have took. Then a clutch of three buried under cork bark. Looked good, went down after 2 weeks of incubation. Then I MISSED a clutch of 3. Found them flat as pancakes when I was cleaning. And now these mystery eggs. *shrug*

Maybe I need a larger group. Maybe 2.4 would be better. Or even 2.3

10.30 would probably work. LOL!

Wouldnt hurt to try man.
Hell how many accounts have you heard about dwarf monitors being kept in groups outside and the dominent male claims his basking point and stack of rocks??????
Really with being kept indoors it just means a bigger enclosure.
The lower males have to tripod to catch the heat that the dominent ones are getting.
So a colony with a few males is definatly not out of the question even in a communual atmosphere.

I would like to give them a different cage. A larger one with more stuff to do. They are in a decent sized cage now. But it lacks height. I would like to get them into something like a 6Lx3Wx6H cage. Could even be 4-5' H, just need more height. Then I want to put lattice all over the walls inside and let them go nuts climbing all over the place. Since they are so weird about nesting Id like to go with several nest boxes at various locations along with a deep substrate all through the cage. With a cage that large I think I could do my 2.4 comfortably. Of course getting the right sex mix is a challenge.

But I would like to eventually get some more of these guys. When/if the croc leaves I will have more space.

Wonder of elevated nesting boxes would work.Good thinkin there man:yourock:
Problem with Varanids,There all different and funky in there own way!!!!!
And you know this!
You could have a method down for one group and have sh*t luck with another that are the same species.
And when i say weird and funky i dont mean species to species,i mean indivuduals.
