a ductless air conditioner?

I recently replaced my 10,000 BTU portable A/C with a 12,000 BTU mitsubishi "slim" ductless A/C. I absolutely love it! This is one of the best investments that I have made for my animals (especially with the heat this summer in Texas).

Some benefits are:

-I only had to drill a small (3") hole in the exterior of my shop.
-The unit takes up a small amount of space.
-You don't have to worry about it leaking inside your room (I was constantly battling "leakage" from my portable).
-It is very power efficient.
-It has no problem keeping up with the heat!

I've attempted to attach a picture here (please excuse the insulation patches...haven't had a chance to paint over them yet):

I don't have one in our snake room but we use them at work quite a bit. They're really nice for cooling a single room. We have 2 units installed in each location one on each side of the room for redundancy incase one fails. I've had one pair running for 8 years strong with no issues cooling year round.

Thanks for the idea.

I planned to use a window unit in my snake room. This will look much cleaner plus most have heat pumps so you can heat the room if needed.

We had them in our coffee shop, and they were horrible pieces of poo. Cooled like crap, and leaked into the walls causing all sorts of issues. Hated them.

No problem Greg...I have gotten lots of ideas off of your website too (mainly for colubrid and rat racks). Very much looking forward to a DIY if you get a chance!

Sounds horrible! I've been around a lot of these (they use them a lot in some austere conditions overseas), and have found the quality ductless ACs are very dependable. One thing I did was have a professional install the entire system (even though I thought I could do it myself), just to ensure that it would remain covered under warranty.

This was in a commercial building we rented. They were installed when the facility was built, and were professionally installed.. Three different AC companies out to look at them over the course of a year, and none of them had anything good to say about the units. If it was just one, I could overlook it as a bad unit, but we had 2, and both gave us problems. They would randomly turn off for no reason, leaked down and in the walls, never sufficiently cooled the facility.....just keep an eye on it is all I am saying. The concept of them sounds great, but what I experienced with them was horrible.

I have one in my Adult Ball Python Room. It has been in service for almost 2 years now. I love it. It has worked flawlessly and is much cleaner than a window unit. The only real thing I have learned over that time is that due to lots of Aspen dust, the blower vanes seem to get quite a bit of build-up of dust over time. When they get too loaded with dirt, the scroll slows down, and the temps get a bit higher or lower than expected (depending on wether it is heating or cooling that time of year). When this happens, I get the air compressor out and shoot the scroll while it is spinning with air to clean them off. Once they are clean, the unit goes back to performing flawlessly. I have had to clean the vanes about every four months historically.

I did debate using one in my rodent room. However, I have a friend that tried it, and they hold up about the same as a window unit. Therefore, for the sake of easier swap out, I prefer a window unit in my rodent room. I did do a fair bit of research looking for a Ductless manufacturer that makes a solid aluminum coil (versus having copper in them), and I have not been succesful at locating one. If I ever find one, I may reconsider the ductless system in the rodent room.

Lastly, we are in the planning stages of a brand new facility (40 x 50 foot steel building), and my plan right now is to use ductless units throughout the entire building, except in the rodent room, for reasons explained above.

I think you will really like that unit for years to come.

What brand Tim? I am thinking we just had a crappy brand. The entire complex had these units in them, and every single business complained about the same things we were experiencing. The landlord was racking up quite an AC bill for 10 units with crappy AC's.

I might be worry of leaks and how you find them (before it's too late)

but even duct AC can leaks, isn't it ? :)

That's funny to finally see the split A/C's hitting the US now. For the most part that's all they use here in EU. They really keep the room looking clean.

If you don't mind me asking...how much did you pay for it?

Hi Pitoon,

I think it ran me about $1200 all in (with shipping and a few extra parts to clean up the appearance). It really saves me during the hot Texas summers here. Definitely one of my best purchases for the room!

what's the make of it? here in Italy you can find cheapo models for about 250euro upwards in over 1500euro for name brands.

what i like most about them is that you can have multiple units through your home and control each one individually.....helps a lot when you really want to control the temps inside.
