This boy got here today...been trying to get him here for about 4 weeks now

He has a bit of growing to do but hopefully in a few months he will make some gorgeous babies, I couldn't get him to fully fire up but the base color is showing.

I didn't want to stress him out to much more so just a quick shoot....will get him to fire up and go for some deep red pics in a few weeks.

Im really starting to dig these gargoyles.

Jeff what is their care like? Similar to cresties? Do they eat that powdered slop or are they bug eaters? Do they get bigger than cresties? Arboreal cage?

Thanks everyone...

What is he going to meet and greet?

He is going to be the lead stud to a group of my 4 adult females once he bulks up a bit, he is about half the size of my big red girl now...she is a monster but she would also eat him alive right now. She is the boss of the females, one gets out of line she eats their tail....cruel hierarchy they have established but interesting.....

They don't grow their tails back or do they?

Thanks V, care is really similar in general...you don't want to house babies together like you can with cresteds. They are meaner and one will dominate, then well you will get tails missing, toes missing etc...

They eat the powdered stuff, I feed the adults roaches once a week during breeding along with the mix. I haven't had much success getting the babies to eat bugs on a regular basis personally, I have read somewhere that they prefer meals almost as large as their head so that might be the reason I don't have the luck with the babies as I am to chicken to feed stuff that big...

I find them to be alot more terrestrial then cresteds, the have claws more than pads, they still have them but tend to stay low to the ground...I'll post a pic with the claws at the bottom here...

The cresteds tend to jump away alot, gargs will to but they will also try to bite you when they feel they have had enough...at least the babies, none of the adults have bitten me yet...got a few that are just pissy all the time and they still don't bite me.

Room temps, under 80 degrees....I prefer long cages with them so height isn't as important but I like some height to make maintenance alot easier when they do want to bolt around....

The adults can live in a cage together and you will get some damage from time to time, like the male that this one is replacing is no longer with us...females get ravenous at times so I give a base layer of fake plants just laying on the ground along with a moist hide for eggs...but you still get issues no matter how many places they have to hide, mostly just missing tails that do grow back.

Thanks guys, the first one I got was on a wacky trade deal and I wasn't sure how I would like them but now I am glad I did get him...it's been down hill since.

Jenea I have awhile to wait before I know what the babies are, they mature and grow so slow...

Thinkin' about it. They are pretty cool. And I like the gecko family a lot.

Id like to try to stick to varanids and geckos. That would be cool.

Very possible gargoyles in the future. They are small, no big deal. Dont have to dedicate a room to them. Or rent them their own apartment like I would have to do if I wanted a trio of water monitors.

Do they stay small like a crestie or get a bit bigger? Can they be kept in a rack system? Similar to leos or do they require more height? How big of an enclosure would you suggest for a trio?

Since they are pissy is it better to keep them all seperate and bring them together for breeding only? I like to keep animals in small groups when I can.

Sorry man, missed the size question in the first part...

They a stockier than crested geckos but not as big as the leachies.

I have kept them in rack systems just fine, just no heat at room temp.

I prefer to keep the adults in a group, that way I can save on space along with making sure they are paired up when they need to be...I throughly check them out once a week besides the quick looks throughout the week but they really get along okay for the most part...will lose a tail from time to time but that is to be expected with breeders. Of course I will caution that introductions will need to be monitored for a few days, very close the first day. That is when most of any issues are going to play out.

I keep my 1.4 in a large container, basically it has the floor space of a 41 qt box only 3 times as tall....lots of fake plants and cork bark to aide in them hiding and being able to get away when needed.

Thanks JC much appreciated.

So it would need to be kinda a custom rack. With taller tubs. Thats manageable.

Hmmmm...

For the babies I use the 15 quart tubs but they fit fine in shoe boxes honestly, I tend to have clumsy hands with fingers that don't always work just right from beating them up at work so at times so it is just easier for me to work in bigger cages...they grow slow for the most part unless you get one from my big girl....I got a picture of a 2 or 3 month old baby of hers next to a 9 month old one and they are damn near the same size...I should find that...lol

My first male I picked up as a hatchling, 3 months old and it took him a little over a year to even start to mature...then it was still another couple of months before he was big enough to meet a female, had his tail eaten within hours of introduction....didn't stop him though he was twisted around and locked up within a few minutes after that.
