View Full Version : Playing around with the camera
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 01:12 PM OK I have been playing around with the manuel settings on my point and shoot camera. These are the settings for theses shots:
Aperature F 8
Shutter speed 1/30
Exposure 0.0
Flash Compinsation -1
ISO 100
Macro setting. Room ligning with the flash. The pics are completely unedited with the exception of the watermark, frame, and resizing to the website standards. No cropping, no sharpening, etc.
What else can I do. How do I make my depth of field deeper?
Thanks for any tips.

Mrs. Sputnik 01-09-2009, 01:24 PM WOW I love that last pic
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 01:25 PM Thanks you two. I am just trying to figure out how to better use my camera.
BerlinHogs 01-09-2009, 02:43 PM at first: cool pics!
>>What else can I do. How do I make my depth of field deeper?<<
when you like to have more sharpness in the depth of the pic try this:
1. higher aperture like F11
2. a slower shutter speed
3. no flash. try to use a verry bright lamp over the objekt that you would like to picture
Stefan
Great shots . I love these guys .

JOHNS6068 01-09-2009, 02:53 PM Cool pic's :yourock: That last one is really cool :yessir:
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 03:03 PM Thanks. I realized after I took the pics that she is just starting to go into blue.
Southern Wolf 01-09-2009, 03:40 PM Hey Jenea.... first... get the plastic tub out of there... you have some kick arse shots... but the plastic detracts from them
As for more DOF (depth of field)... you need to stop down your lens (higher f/ number.. f/11 f/16) ... in doing this ... .you will need to slow down your shutter speed.... so you will have to supplement your lighting... either with a flash or overhead lighst close to the subject.
That last hoggie shot... Im half tempted to boost it.. then clone out the plastic.... that was a sweeeeeeeet pose.
I actually just got done with a hoggie shoot myself... I will post my numbers as well.
Sputnik 01-09-2009, 03:42 PM Great shots, nice and clear and crisp!

Well, my camera will only go to f/8....dang it.
Southern Wolf 01-09-2009, 04:09 PM Then I would set to f/8 and adjust the shutter and ISO to give you the correct exposure. Thats what I love about DSLR's... I have some lenses that go all the way down to f/32 for the serious macro work.... and Ive been there.... done that. I have a closeup of a bug that is only 1/16th of an inch long.... and I can show you the hairs on his back.
grunt_11b2007 01-09-2009, 04:11 PM Those shots are very impressive!!
Alan
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 04:12 PM Thanks Alan....I need to set up a real photo shoot instead of just some snap shots in the cages.

Once you do that... . your hooked.
thats all there is to it... .there will be no stoppin hurrican Jenea
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 04:37 PM But they stay so still in their tubs! Once I move them they are spastic!
147BOAS 01-09-2009, 04:38 PM very nice jenea
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 04:39 PM Thanks Andrew!
guyergenetics 01-09-2009, 04:42 PM That last pic is SHWEET!
Southern Wolf 01-09-2009, 05:19 PM But they stay so still in their tubs! Once I move them they are spastic!
I use a plastic (colored) flower pot tray... they curl up under the tray... they feel secure... then wham....
lift the tray... start shooting.
FloridaHogs 01-09-2009, 08:46 PM I have tried that. They curl up, but are pressed against the sides. As soon as I lift the tray, theu kind of explode out and are sprawled all over....
Southern Wolf 01-10-2009, 12:15 AM Maybe try with a bigger saucer.... you could also try tossing a hand towel over them
JChandler 01-10-2009, 08:02 AM Jenea that last shot rocks
For my shoots I understand the crazy spastic stuff, I put them in the light box which in my case is just a cage with a lot of lights and just leave them for 20-30 mins...give them something to do like a new plant that geckos have been crawling on to get them curious then when I come back most are calmed down enough....
The BP's and boas are easy it is the kings that hate to sit still even after 30 mins....I even went as far as scenting the cage with a mouse to get them to just stroll around slowly hunting for it.
I have no idea what each thing is on the camera yet, turn this thingie here and it is clearer, turn it to far and I don't get what I want...I really do need to read the manual and learn exactly what a DOF is....
norsmis 01-10-2009, 08:24 AM Great pics Jenea! That last one is really cool! I love that little hoggie nose!
FloridaHogs 01-10-2009, 08:46 AM Thanks all....I will play around and figure out how to get good shot of them.
Jeff, DOF is depth of field I believe.
JChandler 01-10-2009, 08:48 AM Jeff, DOF is depth of field I believe.
I know that part I just have no idea which numbers mean what in relationship to the DOF, tried setting it high on one pic and low on others and then sometimes I can tell and other times I can't....
FloridaHogs 01-10-2009, 08:50 AM I knew it all at one point in time, since it was one of my majors.....16 years of not doing something makes you forget everything!
norsmis 01-10-2009, 08:53 AM 2 guys in our IT department majored in photography.... might have to hit them up for some info.... Kev does a great job of educating us though....
FloridaHogs 01-10-2009, 08:56 AM Part of my problem is that I am limited with my point and shoot.
Southern Wolf 01-10-2009, 04:20 PM I know that part I just have no idea which numbers mean what in relationship to the DOF, tried setting it high on one pic and low on others and then sometimes I can tell and other times I can't....
Here is where it gets a bit confusing.
DOF = Depth of Field
However it changes depending on the focal length (50mm vs 500mm)
The more the zoom.... the shallower the DOF (ie... the less that is in focus).
So lets say that it is in perfect focus @ 100mm and f/6.3
HOWEVER
if you change the focal length to say 300mm then everything will not be in focus at f/6.3...... you will prob need to stop down the lens to around f/16 just to get everything back in focus.
If confusion has set in... let me know .... and I will try again.

Thanks.... I try
Jenea, those are great pics. I expect a hoggie calendar from you within the next few years....
