View Full Version : Kimmie throws bad egg

Well, the kim was indeed gravid but she didnt nest right. And I cant figure out why. I have given them every option I can imagine. They dig burrow, the burrows do not collapse, they have areas of various heat and humidity. Nest boxes.

But I found one egg layed on top of the soil. Bad sign. Its no good, they never are when they just drop them. At least in my experience. Plus this one is deflated and small.

Its possible that was just a bad one and I have a clutch hiding in there somewhere. Im heading up to dig up the cage on one of my mad egg searches.

Man, these guys are tough.

Thanks guys. But the prospects are not so good.

I think I need to build them a new cage. Im not happy with what they are in now. I want to give them more height and try to coerce them a little into the right nesting spots.

So V... What happened my man?

Varanus99
01-10-2009, 06:51 AM
Did not find any more eggs. Its a big cage and I searched pretty thoroughly. Usually I can tell where a nest is. Not always but usually. I dug through last night and came up empty.

I may have a bad male. Ive been in denial over that since I really like this trio. But I have to face reality. I might have a bad male :(

There is very little information about these guys as they are not often bred in captivity. So Im only going by the limited information that I have.

My largest clutch so far was 5. I have seen pics from other breeders who have had as many as 8. Usually they seem to lay 4-6. They may be able to lay more I do not know. Based on their body type, they are pancakes, I really dont see them as being highly prolific when it comes to clutch size.

Oh dude its awful. Ive been working with these guys for over 2 years. Ive gotten eggs but so far no hatchlings. Im going nuts over here.

My next venture is to completely rebuild the cage. They may need more height.

As far as looks yeah they got the ackies beat. But the ackies get the edge in personality :D

And Im tweakin', Im tweakin!

Sorry to hear that bro. Whats the possibility she hasn't dropped the good ones yet?

Sorry to hear that bro. Whats the possibility she hasn't dropped the good ones yet?

Id say she's done. She looks skinny now.

Usually if they drop an egg on the surface it means she didnt nest probably and the clutch is no good. Ive never had an egg dropped on the surface hatch. When my youngest ackie threw her first clutch she dropped one on the surface and buried two. They were all bad. The nesting has to be right or, generally speaking, the eggs just dont take.

Ive never experienced a varanid dropping a bad egg and holding some good ones which are later buried. So Id say this clutch is dead in the water. Im not exactly sure what happened but something went wrong.

Im just happy she expelled them. Kims are notorious for dying eggbound. Thats why you will often see adult male kims for sale but very rarely if ever see an adult female up for grabs. What happens is someone gets a pair, loses the female, gets frustrated and want to dump the lone male. Very common. They are a tough species.

That sucks, you'll find the magic touch.

That sucks, you'll find the magic touch.

I hope so. They are tricky.

I only know of a couple of people in the world who have had success with these guys. And I only know a single person who regularly has offspring available.

We can raise them to adulthood, get them to breed, even get them to nest (sometimes) but then hatching the eggs is a whole other ballgame. They are the chondro python of the varanid world. Actually I think there are a lot more baby chondros out there than Kimmies.

Hey V....

How big is your cage? There has been some field studies that claim that they have a tendency to inhabit canopy tops and tree's more than previously thought.

Rob

Its 6L x 3W x 3H.

And I agree with that field study. They like height. They love to climb. Id almost call them arboreal. They like to climb more than they like to dig. They always want to go up.

When I first got them I did some research and found that they inhabit rocky crevices. So I made sure they had tight hides. I had heard whispers that they like to climb. I figured 3' would be enough height for a "mainly" terrestrial lizard. But after keeping them for a time I dont think it is. I think they would be happier in a 5-6' cage. Which is what I have planned for them.

I dont think that will fix everything but it may be a part of the puzzle. If they cant climb as much as they would like to that could cause stress. Even a little stress. And when you're dealing with a species that isnt exactly easy to breed in captivity stress is something I can do without.

So when do you thing you will get their new diggs?

Varanus99

Within the next couple months. I have a few other things I need to do first. Gotta build a bigger cage for the flavi/argus as they are in temp cages. Then Im moving some stuff out which will give me some room for the larger cage.

I gotta REALLY think about how I want to design this one. These guys are so picky!
