The way I look at it..... its false advertising.

We have a guy that was having a "going out of business sale" that own the semi-local truck accessory shop.... and that was last year.... he's still there running the biz.

Because of this... I will drive the 40+ miles to another shop if I need/want something. You want to have a sale.... fine..... but dont call it a "going out of business sale"... the not go out of business.

reducing a collection is nothing liek going out of business sales lol if you think about it anytime you sell any of your reptiles or its offspring you are reducing your collection. since we know no one can keep everything reptile they buy or hatch so i dont see it as false advertising in any ways, you are reducing the amount of animals in your collection. some word it differently and some use it in different terms but no matter how you look at it if you sell any of your collection or offspring you are reducing your collection and some use the term reducing collection when selling more than one animal insted of just saying For Sale. i have seen several ads on this guy on fauna and ks but his prices are usually around market prices and people has bought from him and have positive remarks on it so to have someone in the watch dog area just because they make their header, collection reduction instead of for sale really doesnt make them a bad guy. i would say alteast do more background checks on people and do a little better searching before someones name gets tarnished over a petty header of an ad. now for the fact some of these could not be ones hes raised or produced then he could be considered a flipper and that would more along the lines of blasting his arse if he is. im thinking he most likely is being that alot of his collection hes selling were produced by others, the 01 and so forth he could have had a while but i dont see him buying 07's and 08's to turn around ad sell them that fast unless hes flipping them, so imo you guys can bash and trash him for being a flipper if thats what he is but i dont see a problem with the heading he uses just the fact that alot of these are most likely purchased to flip.

Maybe not false advertisment but it is misleading if you ask me... Thats like having a Going Out of Business Sale but on the sign in really tiny letters you put the word not in front of going out of business... You know....

Maybe selling some critters, to make room for others is reducing your collection to some. LOL

I'm not sure what Matt is doing regarding his animals, but I can tell you how he operates his feeder operation.

I responded to one of his many "dirt-cheap" feeder rodent ads on KS. I found myself in need of rodents and for some reason could not make it to a local show. He's located about an hour from me in Baltimore, so I drove up there with a cooler. He's a nice guy and there were no problems with the transaction, but the red flag for me was the fact that there was no way he had the kind of stock he advertised online. He had set up shop in his mom's basement, and as far as I could see, had a single rat rack and a chest freezer.

Several weeks later, I saw him at a local show. He was LITERALLY dragging three large picnic-coolers across the floor. He went to each of the rodent vendors, filled a cooler, and dragged them to the next one. The next month, I saw him doing the same thing. I guess he fancies himself as a middleman or something, but the weird thing is that I have been buying rodents from the same vendor at the same time, and he gets the same prices as everyone else.

My best guess is that if he is buying feeders in bulk to re-sell, he is probably doing the same thing with snakes. Just my .02

You read my mind Kat, I've been watching this guy since '07 when I really got into balls. He constantly has about 25 animals, usually Ian G line of something for sale and he always lists it as collection reduction sale.

Now this is kinda funny to Big Gunns because BG sold him a snake a few years back and as coincidence would have it. It was a one eyed Sunglow boa. Hate on BG if you want, but BG's heart is too big to freeze all the defects he produces. Really...that's the way BG feels about it. He just can't bring himself to kill them, and you just can't keep them. The cost is waaaaay too high.

BG aint gonna post it, but ask Pete Kahl about Matt and see what he says. BG has met him and he seems like a nice guy, but BG knows nothing about his business practices. BG has noticed the same thing about his collection reduction though. Maybe he's just too lazy to change his add.

Lol yeah I've noticed that guy too. It just strikes me as kind of odd that he always seems to have more collection to "reduce". Even though I keep seeing his ads get marked SOLD the next week there's another "collection reduction" going on.

Just sounds like he's bringing animals into his "collection" and then "reducing" to try to turn a profit. Or, animals in cheap, animals out for a bit more. Sound familiar?

Then take them to a vet and have the vet do it. It is just flat wrong to introduce such defects into the hobby. And I lost all respect for Pete Kahl when he started doing the same, and even breeding one eyed critters to sell the offspring.

This sort of action speaks to me of people who really don't care about the "hobby" at all, but more about what they might gain instead. Not a very respect worthy action IMO.

My favorite is always when the ad reads "I have to sell off my collection due to (insert horrible mishap here) so let my misfortune be your opportunity........blah blah blah.....yada yada.......will trade for other ball pythons and various boa morphs." That is always special in my book.

It's very easy to say "put the animal down" until you actually have to do it....and do it in large numbers.

Big Gunns understands your point, but BG just doesn't have the heart to put an animal down that can live a good life. You may think it's all about the money, but it's not. There's just no way you can place the amount of animals bigger breeders produce in a year with someone that you can 100% trust.

Think about it. Where can you find a person to take 20 to 50 animals a year that have a value of possibly tens of thousands of dollars with the guarantee that they themselves won't turn around and sell them?

You can say you'd put the animals all down, but honestly, BG doesn't believe you would. Not for a split second. You have to walk in someones shoes before you can say for sure what you'd do.

It's not all about the money for Pete or Big Gunns like you may think. Big Gunns just witnessed Pete sell a defective snake to a friend of mine for about 1% of it's true value because he knew this person was gonna give it to his daughter as a pet.

Walk in someones shoes you say. You know nothing Neil. I have had to cull neonates in 3 out of 3 litters so far. Not in large quantities, I'll give you that. But one or two of each litter. Which tells me that just maybe I didn't have things at the optimum for my gestating female. Part of the learning for me.

I say if you are having defects in large quantities, either the gene pool sucks, or someone ain't doing something correctly.

But, I do not introduce defective genes into the hobby. And I don't lie either. :nono: Both of these FACTS, can be proved with very little searching.

Now what exactly did you "cull"? Notice the word "EXACTLY" and what EXACTLY was wrong with the snakes you culled?

It's the boa gene pool that sucks more than Ball Pythons. BG rarely gets Ball Python defects, but he does ......sometimes. Boas are a whole different story though.

Defects are the whole reason BG never got into Caramels until he got a perfect male from Africa at the same time as the Candy Ball. They were actually photographed in Africa together. The Caramel looked like a normal next to the Candy. BG will dig up the pic someday. This Caramel didn't produce kinks this year, but that was only one clutch.

I've culled Boas. Weird eyed albinos, got culled in '06 and I culled a Sunglow with a tail kink right at the vent last year, as well as a sibling DH with the same problem. I have been there. And during the whole Albino thing in '06, I really needed the money. It's all about ethics IMO. I held to my moral standards.

I get your whole "right to live" thing. But how do you guarantee the other party won't breed, and keep it just as a pet? Very few people in this world I would entrust to such a thing.

See, the whole defective birth thing is in our hands to control, by getting rid of the weak, and passing along the strong. Smart breeding is the only thing that can save the gene pool anymore. It's already in bad enough shape, from people being in a hurry to make babies.

It's gotta start somewhere. :yessir:

Get use to culling those weird eyed albinos....you'll see a lot of them if you produce in any numbers. Just like the wobble in Spiders.....it's in the gene. Some people don't think so, but there's no way it's not genetic. It's always either the right eye or both. It's never just the left eye. There's no way that's a coincidence. We may be able to get rid of it(BG doubts it unless another wild gene is found), but it will take YEARS!!!!!!!!

The bad eye thing can be avoided. I have good genes, and already had another Albino/Sunglow litter with perfect eyes on all of them. And in my case, I have an exotic vet from the El Paso Zoo and My own Herp vet who breeds and used to be the vet at the Zoo, both seem to think it was an incubation issue. I confiscated her at day 101 POS due to the other guy in the loan being neglectful in her care. PLUS, he put an Albino to my Albino, when it was supposed to be a DH Sunglow going in.

I still don't think it's the gene though. I think it's impatient people, and lack of knowledge that is the biggest enemy. Albinism has been found in a lot of species, and although in mammals, it tends to lead to blindness, deafness, or the like. They possess those organs, and they are not deformed, they just don't work all the time. It's not till you put them together that the deformities start to occur.

Anyway, my 2ยข.

I do like the harping on the pop on the floor...makes me laugh because I am willing to bet if you go into my kitchen right now next to the deep freezer there is a case of pop on the floor...granted mine is there for lack of storage and not the permanent residence of the pop and I have hardwood floors so I am bet with a flash you can see they aren't 100% immaculate between the dogs and well me since I think I dirty up the place as much as them...it is almost the weekend so mine will be cleaned then but some of the angles they run on and are accepted makes me giggle like a school girl.
