I was wondering if anyone here has ever kept eastern coral or malayan blue coral snakes? Both of which are some of my favorite venomous but i rarely see eastern corals and have never seen a malayan in anyones collection. Possibly because they are snake eaters they are harder to keep in captivity?
Anyone have info on these as captives?

I have kept Eastern Coral snakes in captivity for short periods of time. Almost all of mine were die hard snake eaters. Occasionally I had one that would eat a skink. Not very easy to keep for me, but others have had great success.

Beautiful and deadly. Very hard to keep. Their mimic the scarlett snakes (reptile egg eaters) and scarlett kingsnakes (reptile eaters) are just as hard IMO.

First I would like to stress, I DO NOT believe in "free handling" any venomous reptile, nor recomend or condon it in any way. This picture was taken when I was much younger and MUCH DUMBER...........I mean DUMBER !! I'll just say this.... I did pay for these kinds of actions :nono:. But this is a very nice sized Eastern Coral Snake. And is the only picture I could find of it........ but I will look for more, without the dummy in it.

Ahh they are so gorgeous! Their colors and difficulty as captives is i think what calls me to them. I'm determined to start a captive population but I know it's going to be a pain in the ass >.<

You should look at the scarlet kings. Had this one until she decided to take a walk about last June.

I could get into scarlet kings or even milk snakes...but that just takes all the fun out of it :P
I would like some milks...but as far as venomous goes...corals and cobras...

i would like to have another coral someday......i had alot of success w/ mine in a 55 gal aquarium w/ 6 inches of cypress mulch....i had a large water bowl on one end and about every other week i would dump the little left over water into the mulch under the water bowl....it ate frozen thawed rat snakes, so i kept a couple gravid female chicken snakes i found to hatch the babies as food.... the only down side for me was that i only saw it a couple times a week, early morning or late afternoon....i wouldn't mess with it, as i tried to keep it's stress level down....unfortunatly i needed snake food money and it wasn't in my breeding projects and a friend wanted it really bad, so hopefully when i get my snake room redone i'll have room for another.....i really enjoyed getting to see it, when it came out, like a bonus for the day....

here's one Paul was brokering a few yrs back....carmel albino...

At one time I had about 6 coral snakes set up and doing fairly well. 4 were even eating f/t pinkies. But Just like Jaime most went to some friends that thought they wanted them more than I did. But one little trick I read and it worked fairly well was to put a plate of glass or plexi glass on top of the mulch. The corals would lay under it feeling the pressure of the glass it thought it was hidden; yet I could still enjoy seeing it. As well I am going to get at least one more and would love to get a South American coral or two if I can find them. Oh, and Thanks for posting those last couple pictures Jamie.......I couldn't find the copies I had of them.....Great !!!

I am pretty sure that albino coral did not make. If I remember the story correctly, it was a WC that had some issues and did not pull through. I might be wrong though.

Very nice pics of some awesome looking snakes there guys! I saw this thing on Discovery Channel I think where this guy was showing how some species of coral snakes actually make a kind of "farting" noise and musk like CRAZY to scare off predators. I though that was kind of funny to watch lol. Any of you guys that kept them ever have them do that?

Sylvias, I got the Coral Snakes eating pinkies first by making sure they would take some sort of small snakes f/t. Then I would wash the pinkies in dish washing soap because this takes the oils off the pinkies better, another tip I was told. Then I would scent the "devil" out of the pinkie with whatever snake prey they were eating. After they would eat the scented pinkies.......I'd cut back how much I was scenting them until they would take unscented f/t pinkies. The reason I did this was because it was so much easier for me to get pinkies than baby snakes. To be honest with you I have heard if you can either get baby snakes or raise them yourself, they might be better for the Coral Snakes...... but I know some people who say there is no difference. I also read in one of the reptile magazines where a zoo made a "stew" from ratsnakes and actaully kept it frozen until needed. Then would heat it up and would dip the pinkies in it to scent them and feed the Coral Snakes.

sounds glorious... lol fun stuff! :D I really want to try and get a stable breeding group in my collection eventually so whatever it takes i'll be doing it heh

how exactly do you scent them? I hear that term alot but because ive never needed to do it i dont actually know how its done..

Well scenting is basiclly just getting your food item to smell like the normal food item. I saw on TV where a couple were taking w.c. tree pythons and dipping rats into chicken broth because they had been feeding on birds. So since snakes feed mostly by smell, they eat what smells like their food. Or with Coral Snakes what I did was rub a snake on the pinkie, all over it as much as I could. I first try to use a live snake; because I just think it would smell more "fresh and snakey". Then as they fed well on the scented pinkies and I start scenting less of the pinkie, I would always (well until they took unscented) scent the head because that makes for easier eating. Well that is my two cents for now.
