Iris come in lots of colors - and several varieties. That one's a German bearded iris, named for the "beard" emerging from the center of the bloom. There are also Siberian iris, Louisiana Iris, Japanese iris, Dutch iris . . . you get the picture. They also come in lots of different sizes, from about 8" to 3' tall.
They bloom in late spring, between the tulips and most perennials - and they're one of my favorites.

Reproduction! It's what flowers are all about. Any insect or bird who wants nectar from an iris has to brush across that beard going in or out - and transfer pollen from one bloom to another.
