View Full Version : i dunno...
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 05:55 AM ok, so my big female royal is just short of 4 ft, i'd say 3ft'11" lol, and i just ordered some medium rats, which arrived today.
and oh my, they are huuuuuge, their the length of my hand!!! around 8 incvhes i think, monsters, now, maybe its just me but they seem a bit big for the snake to handle?
i dunno, their enormous!!!
what do you reckon? worth trying them or try something smaller?
im used to feeding royals medium rats where i used to work, but these things are the size of the jumbos we used to get in the shop! haha
i just don't know lol - feel like a total "noob" haha
I quit goin' by small, medium and large and just weigh my rats now, but I would think a four foot royal could handle a rat the size of your hand. When my old female was that small she would take a rat that weighed 250-300 grams. I'm assuming you're feeding F/T? If it doesn't take you still might be able to refreeze it and maybe swap em out with the place you order from for smaller rats.
Quig
Danny 01-13-2009, 06:04 AM That's the problem IMO with the labels "medium", "large", "jumbo", it's all too subjective. Best idea is to order by weight if at all possible.
She can take them though, I'm sure.
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 06:11 AM i know this is a really stupid question lol, but i'm used to feeding little colubrids - thats nice and simple
i weighed the rats their all between 200 & 250g so by your post Quig, i should have no problems lol. (thats a 6th of her weight!!! (but she is a bit slim).
but oh my this thing is going to take some time to defrost and heat!! lol
Varanus99 01-13-2009, 06:20 AM I never went by weight. I always went by if the rat is the same girth as the snake at its largest point play ball. Even if the rat is a wee bit larger game on.
Incidentally erik if you're kinda new to pythons they can handle much larger meals than colubrids. For example, a 3' corn snake could eat an adult mouse or perhaps a small rat. A 3' burmese python could eat Rhode Island.
Well you get what Im saying :D

its actually around the girth but its her wee head im thinking about lol, this is definately going to be a spectacle to watch really.
haha, yea, it is certainly a learning curve for me to be honest haha
You need to understand then, that a snakes jaws can stretch enough to allow something 3-5 times the size of their heads to get through to their belly :D. It IS a sight to watch what they can swallow sometimes LOL.

i know, but it just seems mad haha
honestly, if those rats are fair game then i bet theres no chihuahuas in africa! lol
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 06:53 AM you know, i actually feel a bit stupid for having asked lmao, in hindsight of course she could manage them but it was the shock of getting these monster rats haha
No reason for that. When you're used to colubrids it's understandable. Just thaw one and try it and see how it goes.
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 07:08 AM yea, i'll have my cam at hand - and i'm likely going to be really rather highly amused if she manages this!
FloridaHogs 01-13-2009, 07:43 AM Hey Erik, don't feel wierd asking such a question, the only dumb questions are the ones not asked!

jayefbe 01-13-2009, 12:52 PM We personally feed younger balls that are trying to pack on the weight between 15-20% of their body weight per feeding (every 5 days). It works great for us, and the young girls are PACKING on weight. My girlfriend has a spider female '08 that's nearing 800 grams (she is an anomaly), and a mojave and cinny both born in September nearing 400 grams. I also have an '07 het albino female, arrived 11/20 at 581 grams. She's already at over 1000 grams now!
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 01:53 PM was that a hint Jenea :P:P
Jayefbe - yea, it sounds about right in hindsight but just seemed a bit too much as im used to little colubrids haha
if she takes these every 7-10 days then she'll be breeding weight in no time lmao
FloridaHogs 01-13-2009, 01:55 PM was that a hint Jenea :P:P
Ummmm..............YES!!! :D
erikpaterson 01-13-2009, 01:58 PM Ummmm..............YES!!! :D

JChandler 01-13-2009, 08:53 PM The whole size name vs. weight thing reminds me of this 'jumbo' rat and small rabbit I got in awhile back....they are in a shoebox container for a size reference...I thought the rabbit was supposed to be bigger according to the normal weights I was given....not complaining she ate that rat happily but just was shocking to unload it from the box...lol

its bigger than a rabbit, thats still huge haha
African Beast 01-14-2009, 07:34 AM Get a retic, thay can handle those rats from their first feed...
She should be fine, feeding a little bigger now and then is actually good for them IMO.
I try to keep my balls running in on a little bigger rats, especially the females.

that was the biggest of the 2 ratsm i thought i'd check and see if she could manage it
but, as i type, she must be around the 1400g mark lol
The rat looks right nice inside the snake eh? It was a pretty good sized rat but I think she handled it rather well.
erikpaterson 01-16-2009, 05:13 PM aye, it is a fair sized rat indeed but she managed really rather well indeed and she'll be growing in no time lol
