From what I have read they have never been bred successfully in the U.S. I know Pro Exotics and Bob Clark have some but have never produced them. I would say if anyone had a chance it would be Dave & Tracy Barker. They may even have some stashed away somewhere.

Those Boelens are probably very expensive. I would image if there is a captive bred specimen it is probably 10k at least. They are beautiful snakes but I would never keep one. They seem to majestic to keep in a cage. I would feel to much guilt if something went wrong.

You and me both, man! I do see c.b. babies pop up on Kingsnake every once in a while for $3500, if I remember correctly.

This has been the most informative site I've found about them so far. They're definitely my personal holy grail, and really would like to get a pair one day.

...(sigh) some day.....

There have only been 3 captive breeding's in the USA.....and not many hatchlings came out of it.... However, There are quit a few CH that are coming in and have come in over the last 3 years... They are about as good as your going get seeing how WC are illegal to export. They have to be F1 to export.

I know of a few folks that are working on Captive US breeding's if anyone is interested... and Kam @ Bushmaster usually, i mean two to three times a year and some one else in Florida..

Cheers

I talked to Dave Barker a bit about these at a local show a couple months ago... his thought is the biggest reason not many people have been successful with them is because everyone has had to work with wild caught animals and the females are not easily acclimated to breeding. He predicts that as soon as the captive hatched babies that became available a few years ago become breeding age, you will see a lot more captive bred babies being produced, as their captive hatched parents are easier to acclimate than their wild caught grandparents. I hope he is right. They are really an awesome snake to see, and I think I've only seen photos of them so far.

Many of the CH babies are of breeding size already, and have been for quite a while. I personally think it has to do with cycling and how they are raised. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to test out a few theories.

Dave barker is right on.... I have a lot of WC scrubs and some from the same region that the Boelens inhabit. With any WC animal it takes many years to acclimate and some just never enough to produce offspring. The key with any WC is to get them small and young..

Josh is right, there have been hundreds imported over the last 3-4 years that have been CH in Indo. and they are of breeding age. There is just something tricky about these guys and the key we all agree on is COLD , COLD COLD.... There is a guy in Italy who just produced some eggs and babies and the key was keeping them outside in the winter months, believe it or not.

A few other scenarios include AC's in there cages to get the temps down way low at night. Another avenue that many overlook is that they seem to require a rather large cage....

It will be interesting to see over the next 2 years who produces them and what technique they used from the captive hatched babies that have poured in.

Josh ... How are yours coming along?

Rob

Mine are doing great. They hatched on Feb 1st 2008, and once they started feeding they didn't look back. They are very active, even at low low temps. Their shed cycles are right on track and they're growing slowly but steadily.

ScrubyScrubyDoo

Nice.... Have they gone through there Ontogentic change yet? It's amazing that a python can one, stand the cold temps let along be active during such temps

Not much color change yet. The reds got redder, and the light pattern is brighter. Their heads are just starting to get really dark, and I expect a significant change after their next sheds.

We lost the second male a few days before xmas. As he wasn't in my care, I'm not entirely sure as to the cause, but it seems to have been a fungal issue. The 1.2 above are still in my care and right on track. Hopefully they'll be shedding again in a month or two and start to get the classic Boelen's look!

I think there have been 5 so far. Jim Leware (2004 and 2006), Jason Baylin and Frank Memmo (2001), Paul Miles (1993), and the mysterious Italian (2008) that's been rumored. I haven't seen any pictures or heard any details about the Italian yet though.

All the same, I wouldn't mind being added to such a short list ;)

Here's another shot, since they were all being relatively calm this morning:

High elevation, high humidity, low temps. Quite a challenging combo.

I can't wait until I can get some Boelens myself. I sat in on a presentation that Al Baldoga gave at the Tinley NARBC in 2007, VERY interesting species. Do you handle yours much Josh or pretty much just let them be?

I read about some scientist trying to get a rare high elevation tree frog to reproduce. They were not having much luck until they put mist/fog machine in the tank to give the tank a cloud bank effect. Frogs started reproducing like crazy after that. Just a thought.

Josh
01-12-2009, 01:32 PM
I handle them pretty regularly. They're not nippy at all, but they'll squirm like hell if you try to restrain them.

I don't think humidity is an issue with reproduction. I'd be concerned with damp stagnant air from a fog machine, but I'll worry about all that down the road. For now I'm just watching these guys develop and loving it.

The eye on the pic posted with that ad looks odd to me. The pupil seems off center, and oddly shaped. Could just be the pic, and I didn't inquire about it, so I'm in no way trying to imply there might be a problem. Just something I noticed.
