I used to work in Office Furniture. I did everything from take it down , install it , repaint it , refinish it , recover it and place it in storage.

I sit at home since I hurt my knees at work and my boss decided to not only fire me but not pay his workman's insurance so I've been fighting him over medical care & comps for the last 16 months.

I pretty much run our rodent colony & snake colony now.

I am in real estate. I do all sorts of stuff.

Mainly Im a landlord. I own investment properties which I rent out. Mostly residential but I dabble in commercial. I also "flip" properties if something comes along that I can clean up and make a little money on quick. And lastly I manage properties for people and do all the day to day stuff.

By trade Im a contractor. I do carpentry, electric, plumbing, roofing, etc. Basically anything to do with a house. I did that for many years before I bought my first property. I still do some of the work on my properties myself although I dont lug 100 boards of drywall up 4 flights of stairs any more thank you Jesus.

And guess what boys and girls? I allow pets in my buildings! Got a 22' retic? No problem! Oh, you have a 7' water monitor? You'll probably need an extra bedroom then. No problem! LOL!

A short list of the stuff some of my tenants have: niles, leos, carpet pythons, bearded dragons, common boas, savs, cornsnakes, balls, iguanas, a burmese, water turtles and one tortoise that I know of. Also ferrets, cats, dogs, birds, all manner of small animals really and plenty of fresh and salt water fish tanks. If you put it all together I have a pretty decent zoo.

Here's my theory on allowing pets. Most landlords dont. This is what I have found after 17 years in the business. Its true that sometimes pets...mainly non-cage pets like dogs/cats...cause some damage from time to time. Ok, fine, thats what security deposits are for. But I have found that people with pets tend to be better tenants. They stay longer, they are more responsible, they pay their rent on time, they take care of the place. I have tenants who who wake up extra early to walk the dog, run home from work on their lunch break to take care of their animals, etc. When you have animals your apartment becomes more of a "home" not just a hotel if you know what I mean. And for people without kids having pets tends to ground them. Meaning they dont party 24/7 like some of the other yahoos Ive had. That is not to say I have NEVER had a problem with a pet owner. Of course I have. But overall pet people tend to be better tenants in my experience. Plus by allowing pets it opens up a whole new market for me. There are MANY hard working, high class folks with good jobs and excellent credit who cant find an apartment because they have a pet they love and refuse to give up. So they come to me. Ill take an alligator if the people are good.

There is NOTHING glamorous about being a landlord.

Chasing rent, cleaning up garbage, fighting with tenants, unclogging toilets, dealing with fire marshals, building inspectors, etc etc etc. Sometimes I wonder where I went wrong when Im dragging a discarded mattress to the dumpster, lol.

Sometimes I think Im more of a baby sitter than a landlord.

CK, allowing the cats/dogs like anything else in this business has pros and cons. Personally I believe the pros outweight the cons. The one thing I will say is they are very hard on carpets. So if you have a nice unit with some brand new carpeting I might ask for additional security since more than likely the carpets wont survive unless the tenants are VERY on the ball. I also have in my lease that all animals must be either on a leash or in a secure container when in common areas. Nobody listens but at least Im tryining :)

Great idea for a thread!

Regional Sales Manager for Trugreen Lawn Service...

We sell for 18 branches throughout the state of FL and are about to take on the entire Canada Region as well as the NE region...
(Maine, New Hampshire, Mass., NY, Virg. and so on...) All out of the Florida Regional Office out of Sunny Clearwater, FL :)

I also happen to spin records in which I started when I was 14... Was in 21+ up nightclubs by 16 djing in Maine, New Hampshire & Mass. Moved down to FL and spun some decent gigs in a few differen't nightclubs in Downtown Tampa, Ybor city and some private gigs... Was on 93.3FLZ DJ'ing at the Tampa Bay Buc's Party house a couple of times and got to meet some well known people as well as make some new friends/business... Did some other work but have since then kept it minimal... I dunno... It's a ton of fun but leaving a Nightclub/Bar/Party at 5-6-7am gets kinda tiring and I hate waking up in the middle of the day... Feels like I've accomplished nothing!

Definitely had some of the best times of my life spinning records though... nothing like the feeling of controlling 500-600 people at any given second!

I'll probably be at Trugreen for another couple of years since the promotion and my goal is to be done when I turn 25 so I can focus on the Ball & Leo Business I am building with my lovely other half... Right now we are just focusing heavily on adding, adding, adding and adding to the collection as well as holding back everything female wise that we produce over the next couple of years...

Currently I am using my GI Bill money to go to school (I was also a paratrooper in the Army), and working as an instructional aide in county schools for severely handicapped kids.I am basically a bouncer for developmentally disabled kids with behavior issues that randomly go after the teachers, and other aides. Wow this thread just taught me a lot about people I have talked to on other forums that I never knew. Cool stuff!
As for me, I am a stay at home mom of 5 kids (yes, I know, I'm crazy) - a 15yo daughter Alex, 12yo son Zach, 2 8yo daughters Tori and Maddie, and a 10 month old son Nathen. I also run the breeding business (bearded dragons and getting back into leopard geckos, although that is all on hold until the fall of 09), and am one half of the team that runs the Central PA Reptile Expo (the reason the breeding stuff is on hold). I also dabble in website design stuff, but not on any scale really worth mentioning. If I know someone that needs a quick cheap website, I put one together. I have a degree in Computer Sciences, but hated the IT world after many years of tech support, so I left to become mom full time. I like this job much more!
Matt is a propane operator at one of the biggest propane/oil companies in the world. Basically he unloads big railroad cars full of liquid propane into huge onsight tanks, then loads up tractor trailers that deliver the propane to the heating companies to go to homes and businesses. It's not a bad job, pays the bills sometimes, and his summer hours are great. They just opened a new terminal, so life has been hectic for him, but hopefully in the next few weeks it will get back to normal.

I also want to say thanks to everyone that has served or is serving in the military! My dad was a 20 year Navy man, so I have the utmost respect for what you guys do to help protect us. God Bless you all!

I know what you mean! Most people dont understand me (except reptile people). Most think I am a little touched from all the deployments...... Who knows, maybe I am. :machinegun:

Not being able to relate to civilians after being in war happens to many soldiers. I know guys that did three and four tours in Nam cause they couldn't handle in on the outside. Many of them are suffering greatly from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for those civilians in the group) now. I can't count the nights I've sat up on the phone trying to talk someone out of killing themselves or someone else for no real reason.
