View Full Version : Unemployment Rate

Last week the US lost another 35,000 jobs and this week we've already lost another 72,000 and it's only tuesday. :machinegun: Companies are posting terrible profit margins and some are showing major losses. So the first thing they reach for ...... layoffs. Hopefully the president, congress and the house can agree on what to do quickly.

It just figures, when my ankle is just about completely healed I'm not going to be able to find a job. :machinegun: Nobody is hiring right now. :machinegun:

My company is doing well.... for now. The unemployment rate in this area is astronomical.... we were at 11% BEFORE all this decline....

oh this is a topic I sadly am affected by. I am "currently" a "full time employee", monday through friday 8-6. BUT I am NOT working at ALL!!! :( I am a dog groomer and when money gets tight the first things people stop spending money on is the pets. My workplace currently employees two groomers and I am " handicaped" persay I can't lift anything over 40lbs due to slipped disks in my back. I am just waiting for the chopping block. :( I am looking through the classifieds today and handing out my resume' left and right. NOTHING! Nobody wants to hire. I have heard rumors that things are only going to get worse. UGH!!!!

Yeah it's gettin bad. I work for a fairly small tech/manufacturing company and they just went through and laid off 5 people. Now we're all getting cut back to 20 hours a week which sucks big time. Hopefully unemployment will cover the difference cuz if not I'm SOL and I'm gonna have to find another job and fast!

There's been talk around here about me going back to work as well -- but I doubt I'll find anything in this market -- seem like bankruptcy attorneys and foreclosure specialists are in big demand -- I am neither.

IDK right now I'm flipping stocks and making a pretty decent weekly wage -- but there are good days and bad days -- a steady income would be nice. But between the rising cost of everything and the huge bump in our medical insurance making ends meet in OC is increasingly difficult without a double income.

Well theres no job lay offs here at the farm for now....but it's more a matter of making things work with the price of things rising like they are...Farming doesn't have a large profit margin even in good times...I know a couple farms that have 1500 cows have already sold out....I hope we can hang in there here....We are in the middle of a law suit as well with some bad work that was done during our last expansion and that's not helping matters at all.....Long story short on that.. The plumber who did our work did some bad connections and bad water got into the good water tank and made a bunch of cows sick and we lost quite a few as well.....I hope things turn around soon.....

somehow we're still doing good at the pet store I work at. We actually broke last years sales for Christmas and are still consistently beating our weekly goals. Oddly though they're cutting back hours and at the same time hiring new people. Its really starting to piss me off too. I ask for more hours constantly and they say they're not available. but then they hire new employees to work in my department where I could easily fill in, with 5 years more experience and knowledge.

I make going out of business signs and it seems to be going well....

Really we run on a skeleton crew already and with winter here the OT is just been crazy if you are willing to put in the blood money, minus 20+ degree windchills at night soaking wet fixing water main breaks.....not for me these days, bones and joints seem to hold the chill longer lately.

John and Jeanette, Bry and I used to do that. Usually he would post under my name. I now use internet expolorer and he uses foxfire.

The job thing eck! Bry's workmans comp case is at a standstill and my hours have been cut at work. I made a whole 20 dollars in tips today and I normally make 45, so things are changing for the worse right now.

2 other restaraunts have closed their doors in my area and the ones that are opened are feeling the same pinch as the rest of us.

My prayers are with all of us who are affected by this nightmare.

Is that nation wide?

Yes, that's nation wides. But most of that is major corporations that have publicly announced, I don't beleive it factors in local small business etc. Those type of true numbers usually don't surface right away. I don't think it will show the total picture until they release unemployment rates for the month.

The sad thing is, even seeing numbers of how many are getting unemployment don't show everything. I wonder how many people are unemployed and aren't eligible to collect checks anymore. I read the average person can collect unemployment for like 18 weeks. I think this downturn is going to last a lot longer than that. I heard that even the money Obama is giving for infrastructure repair etc will take a year to actually start creating jobs.

Quote from that article:

"The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans continuing to claim unemployment insurance for the week ending Jan. 17 was a seasonally adjusted 4.78 million, the highest on records dating back to 1967. That's an increase of 159,000 from the previous week and worse than economists' expectations of 4.65 million."

Highest since 1967, WOW!!

I usually don't get into a lot of political discussions, but coming from a small business stand point, it's nearly impossible to afford employees with the taxes now a-days and they keep rising, so businesses can't afford their employees. Granted I know there are many other reasons businesses downsize, such as sales and general lack of funds. But if they cut back on taxes, I would be able to have another employee or two and still probably pay under or around what I pay in employment taxes, so that would give 1-2 more people jobs and a steady income or at least extra income.

I understand the purpose of taxes, but I'm finding it harder and harder to keep an employee or two with how high they are now a-days. It would make it a lot easier for people to get jobs if the companies could afford the employees.

So far I have yet to hear a plan from the Government that will do good for anyone...
