Tosha 01-28-2009, 10:29 PM Those are most cool creatures thanks for the post!
I like those too. That one's pretty colorful
JChandler 01-28-2009, 10:46 PM those are cool
NoahHart 01-28-2009, 10:56 PM I love those little guys. I grew up catching them. I really wish they thrived in captivity without having to feed them ants. I would love to have a big cage with some of those. I tried a long time ago but it was like $40 for 1000 ants shipped and they can eat that in a couple days.
surfinball 01-28-2009, 11:02 PM I've always wanted to set up a tank of them to. The ants are the only problem. I think you'd probably need about 2 dozen ant farms.
Gator 01-28-2009, 11:05 PM great pics-he doesn't look happy to see you...

Is that all they will eat ???
Mrs. Sputnik 01-28-2009, 11:52 PM That is cool looking

Pretty much. Ants are it.
NoahHart 01-29-2009, 12:13 AM They will eat crickets for a short while in captivity but ants have a type of vitamin (an acid) that they have to have to live. I cant remember what it is right now.
norsmis 01-29-2009, 06:25 AM Way cool! I would get in trouble all the time in grade school for catching these guys and keeping them in my pencil box until after school. We would then have lizard races! We always let them go near a big ant mound so they could have a snack after a hard days racing!
Varanus99 01-29-2009, 07:56 AM We used to get these in the pet shops many, many years ago. I believe they are protected now. Not sure, but I know I havent seen them around for quite some time.
These are one of those "dream lizards" that people only wish they could keep. Its not that they are super rare or even expensive. Its they are nearly impossible to keep alive for any length of time.
Varanette 01-29-2009, 08:49 AM OOOOOOOO he's kewl looking! LOL....:)
Laura Fopiano 01-29-2009, 09:27 AM I used to spend hours catching those in the 60's and early 70's.
When my daughter's were in 9th grade I would drop them off. Armed with my coffee can and paint brush, I would head straight to the football field and running track to gather ants. They were so embarresed when their friends would ask "what's your mom doing"?
Mana (the oldest of my twins) had a pair of horned lizards that I would gather food for. And true, they don't live long in captivity. She was crushed when they failed to thrive.
That a cool lizard and had no idea they only ate ants. Thanks for the lesson.
HOPPIN' HORNY TOADS!!! (In keeping with my Yosemity Sam character) I had a horned lizard many years ago, was about 12 or 14 uyears old, mail ordered it from a place in Lubbock, Texas. Actually found the add inside the back cover of a comic book, I think. Cost me a buck and a half plus shipping, which wasn't much more than that forty plus years ago. It only survived that summer but I remember letting it go on ant hills to let it feed. We had huge mounds of a red and black ant that I never did know the species.

You haven't seen them around because they are in steep decline here in Cali. They are disappearing from 80% of their range. They are a species of special concern (highest state designation) and being reviewed again for federal listing. I sincerely hope you let this guy go on his way, these guys need all the help they can get surviving in the wild (not to mention, it's illegal to collect them).

NoahHart 01-29-2009, 11:20 AM That last pic is awesome! I hope they make a comeback, they are great little creatures.
Kat, is the problem loss of habitat, over collection in the past, disease, or a combination? Curious.

Who was it wanted to ride a Triceratops??? Right there's about as close as you can get Bro :D.

Combination of most of the above, but also loss of food sources. Native ants get pushed out by the big, bad introduced invasive species and Horned lizards are a notoriously picky group of eaters. We used to have these guys here in the central valley, but too much ag chemical exposure is thought to have finished 'em off. Now the coast range is the last real hold out population.

Leave it to the humans and that search for the all mighty dollar. That's really too bad because they really are a neat group of lizards.
147BOAS 01-29-2009, 02:20 PM i like those horned lizards very nice
Desert 01-31-2009, 02:28 AM Coastals are my fav horned lizards. I used to see them occasionally at Gavilan in Riverside county.
One thing that surprised me. One summer I was on a trip exploring in New Mexico in the mountains west of the Plains of San Agustin. At 8000 feet, up in the pines, we observed numerous horned lizards. :wamma:
LP Reptiles 02-18-2009, 11:46 AM i luv these guys, when i was stationed in Fort Bliss TX. they are everywhere over their... i found a large female, had her for a couple of days and she layed eggs.... i let her go though and a local pet store hatched out the eggs are released them...they looked sweet.
i know theres people that have captive bred ones, i was goin to get a couple but the ants they eat are hard to get in oregon
liled17847 03-12-2009, 04:18 PM Do they realy shoot blood from there eyes ?

jviperidae 03-13-2009, 06:57 AM I believe you're refering to formic acid Mr. Hart. I've heard anecdotally of gut loading feeders w/ limes, which are supposedly high enough in formic acid to meet the requirements for Phrynosoma. Killer little guys regardless.

I would like to see some evidence of someone who has done this over a long period of time and been successful. If so I would consider keeping them but I dont think it works very well.
Damnitbonnie 03-13-2009, 03:37 PM One of the shops that buys my dragons had them last year. Was told they were captive bred babies. I didn't get them either because of the ants.
