View Full Version : First Ovulation Ever!
Southern_Style 02-21-2009, 02:28 PM Woohooo!!!!
Please tell me this looks like the begining build of an ovulation.....
This is the first ovulation ever for me and for her if that's what it is, she's never breed until I got her......... I'm so excited:wamma::wamma::wamma: Can Ya tell ? The male I breed her to has never breed before either.
I picked this girl up in mid October and she didn't start eating until late November... Her first lock-up was 12/29/08 and her last was 1/24/09 her last meal was on 2/8/09 just a medium rat........

If it is an ovulation then you can expect babies around the 125 day mark. Or she will have what is called the Post Ovulatory Shed and you can count out 105 days from that.
If she is ovulating I wouldn't handle her all that much. Especially at her size.
Was the male completely done breeding her? That could just be a PRE-ovulation swell and the real one is yet to come. Boas can also ovulate twice and the males will often continue to breed through the second one. It's always a good idea to leave them together and get as much love juice from the male as possible.
Congratulations and be sure and update us with pics in about four months!
Here is a link I found VERY useful throughout the years. The "Breeding Boas" section is one of the best around. Hope it helps:

WOW....That was a really well written answer!
I've never breed any kind of reptile and I am here to learn. That was sooo very helpful to me and I am sure that Beth found that EXTREMELY helpful.
:yourock:Jason!

Question, TIA... What is her humidity at? Her skin looks very dry in the pictures. Make sure to keep her humidity around 60%.

Thanks...... I made a HUGE mistake  and didn't notice what was happening until it was too late..... She likes hanging out on the top of the water fall and the lights I have up there were too close and she was cooking herself :( Since the burn.... I've been soaking her in luke warm water and rubbing her down with Neosporin after. It really just looks like a really bad case of dry skin.... no blisters or soars of any kind.
Congrates. What was the male? Good luck.
I really have no idea what type of Boas either of them are... Long story short.... the male was supposed to be a 6ft ball python and I couldn't see him living a celibate life... so, I found him a female locally the same size as him.... neither of them have been breed until now.
This is the male...... he has lots of pinks through out his body....

That's what the Bush League is all about. Helping one another out, not tearing each other down. :yessir:

Larry brings up a great point (and I don't know how to use the multi quote feature just yet). If she burned herself before she'll most likely do it again. My boas maintain a body temp at around 82 degrees unless they've just eaten. Gravid females need to maintain a body temp of around 86-87 degrees to cook those babies. So if she was hugging that heat lamp before, she's definitely going to hug it now.
If you haven't already, I would invest in 3 things asap. UTH (Under Tank Heat), a quality thermostat, and a temp gun. Flexwatt is the most commonly used UTH and with a good Thermostat your female will not be able to burn herself. The temp gun will allow you to tweak the heat and check her body temps throughout her pregnancy.
You can get all of these from Rich at Reptile Basics. http://www.reptilebasics.com/. He'll even connect the wire to the flexwatt for you. There are MANY other places to purchase these from, but Rich has always been the guy I go to.
On a side note - I hope I'm not coming across as a "know it all" boa guy. I am by NO means an expert and only produced my first litter last year. This information was handed down to me by guys and gals who have been doing this a LOT longer than I have and I'm simply passing it along. I hope it helps.

I've actually removed the indoor outdoor carpet, moved the branches further away from the lights and put the cypress mulch back in ;)
I placed a couple orders with Rich already.........Great Guy to deal with and very helpful. I picked up a couple thermostats, flex watt and a pretty nice temp gun from him :)
Nope! I'm grateful that you've taken the time to post on this thread :yourock:
I'll be moving her into a smaller enclosure in the next week or so........ I just want to make sure that she is no longer interested in him ;)
Again Thanks For The Input :yourock:

Laura Fopiano 02-25-2009, 04:25 PM Congrats girly, there's nothing like getting your first litter on the ground! I was like a crazy person from the breeding (would make my family get up from what they where doing and come see the boas locked up) and the birth! (they were a little more excited but not much, it's really gross mom LOL)
