How many of you guys/gals use temp guns? It took me a while to get one, but man I don't know how I lived without one for so long. I got the 412 IR from Reptile Basics and love it. Still have a few tubs with thermometers but mainly because they are also hygrometers and I like to know my humidity levels.

I have / use one, but it is a smaller one. I love it. In my opinion, it is one of the most important husbandry tools any snake breeder can have.

I use one of the original pro exotics models. Small but it still works great. I use it to check the basking spots in my lizzard tanks and also to check for hot spots on the heat tape in my racks.

I have had a temp gun for years. They are great for checking hot and cold side in enclosures.

Love 'em!!

We currently use Accu-rites in all of the cages and tubs but decided to get a temp gun (pro exotics PE-1) to monitor and keep an eye on a particular females body temp as well as the egg temp's thru out the course of her incubating her eggs maternally...

I have to say it proved very worthy and a great investment for the $20-$25! ;):)

I use a Pro Exotics PE-2. Its been working great for years. I mainly use it to check the accuracy of my digital temp gauges.

Probably the most important husbandry tool somebody can own. My personal favorite is the Raytek MT4 model. It runs off a 9 volt battery. I hate those stupid little watch batteries that run out every month.

I agree it's a great husbandry tool. I don't know how I got along without one now that I have one..

I don't have one but I really would like to get one sometime... The snakes have been fine without it for as long as I've been keeping them though.

I tend to misplace things often so I have purchased 3 of the PE-1's and love them. Got a nicer unit to back up the others for critical temp applications. Besides the battery going dead, has anyone ever had any problems with them?

Great investoment for any herp keeper imho too.

I haven't had any probs with my PE-1 to date ( 2 going on 3 years now ) and Lolo has the PE-2 that I liked a bit more but it needs batteries. I find them to be a great tool not only in spot checking hot spots but body temps too to get a better idea of how well my set ups are working.

I just use a 15 dollar special I got at radioshack and has done fine. Eventually i may go to a proexotic when I get more high dollar stuff or I make more high dollars lol

I don't know how you could live without one if your trying to breed snakes. I have the PE-1 and I LOVE it.

I just use my hand.... Just kidding. I actually dont have one but I think my wife bought me one for Christmas. I have been hinting around at one for a few months. I deal mostly with colubrids so the temps arent, in my opinion, quite as crucial as with other species. I do use temp guages with probes on my racks.

I love my temp-gun. I lost my first 2(one by one, not both at once), and got another one. I actually end up dragging mine around with me, and for the first week I'll shoot the temps on the hood of my truck after it's sat out in the sun all day... check the temp of the sidewalk... lol.
Gotta love 'em.

I use the PE-1 mostly, and it's great. I do happen to have a couple others that I had from my days of doing IT work that also involved hands on time with the servers and fixing crap when it broke or maintaining the network. They are a bit bigger, so are a pain to just grab and use or bring with me. I've found the PE-1 to be just as accurate as the more expensive ones, just have a larger spot ratio.

Hi there Ball huggers.
Looking at getting a PE-1 myself, but this thig is DARN expensive (the R is
10-1 vs the $ and i need to have it shipped half way around the world...).
How far away does one need to be from the object to measure the temp? How accurate is it.
I realize that these Q's would prob be better aimed at Mr Brown himself/Robyn.
But i wanne hear the truth from the peaple with the big balls....:wamma:

i LOVE my little temp gun. I honestly dont know how i did anything right without it! :D ( kidding, getting a feel for things is easy once you know what range you need to be in!)

Seriously though, best investment ( 20.00 ) ANYONE can make!!!!

The temperatures are extremely accurate. As far as distance goes, it has a 1:1 spot ratio. So, for every inch it is away from the surface, it takes the reading of an inch diameter circle. Or atleast that's how I understand it. I generally use it extremely close to the surfaces I want to check, so it's not really a problem for me. If you can't safely do that, the PE-2 has a 6:1 ratio which is for every 6 inches away you are it reads the temp of a 1 inch diameter circle. It's also got a little sighting laser on it, and for 20 extra bucks, I think it's worth it. There are all sorts of models out that have very tight cones and can be very accurate from a farther distance, they just cost alot more money.

My 2 cents.

I have a couple of temp guns and I rarely know where they are -- they come in handy for setting up stuff my my stuff is all "set it and forget it" so I don't use them a lot. To be honest if you know how to read your snakes I'm not entirely sure why you'd need to be taking temps all over the cage all the time?

I've had mine from Pro Exotics for 6 years, use it almost every day and have never had to put new batteries in it.

Because things malfunction like heat tape and thermostats..... Yes I know my snakes but if one is in blue or something of that nature, they arent usually as willing to leave that hot spot that is burning him/her or to come out if its too cold for them. They are also handy at shows checking temps in the displays. I worry about having pythons in a cold show and want to make sure the heat tape under the displays is working correctly.
Incubating eggs or gravid live-bearers is another good reason to have a temp gun.

We rarely use them as well but do pull them out every now and then just to double check temps...

I keep getting really high readings. When it's 80-90degrees my temp gun reads like 110-120 I dunno, even with fresh batteries.. I'm sticking with digital for now.

Digital? Do you mean a probe thermometer? I get a 10-15 degree difference with my probe thermometer and my gun. I think my gun gives me the true surface temp since the probe is always off the surface a bit.

My temp gun helps me sleep better.
