View Full Version : How does this look?
Larry Petty 03-09-2009, 02:11 PM How does this look for a rat feed for my breeders? I am looking for a cheaper feed. I only pay $11.50 for a 50lb bag of 15% FRM here. However, my production is terrible. Mazuri 6f is $19 a bag. The feed below is around $12.

Cornball 03-09-2009, 02:21 PM What size are the pellets? I do top feeding and need blocks so the food does not fall through the wire.
Larry Petty 03-09-2009, 02:31 PM I haven't found that out yet. I have an email into a local supplier. If they don't respond soon, I will call them.
Sputnik 03-09-2009, 04:08 PM Interesting, I might have to see if my local stock feed place has that or something similar.... Only reason I have not used stock feeds is because of the anitbiotics introduced into stock feeds. It worried me that this could have an adverse affect on the snakes eating rodents that were fed a diet of this.... but non-medicated looks safe.
I'll have to check into that....
Larry Petty 03-09-2009, 04:59 PM I'm wondering which would be better...
20% protein, 1.2% lysine, 7% fat
or
16% protein, 0.75% lysine, 3% fat
I can get this feed for $10.80 a 50lb bag.
Cornball 03-09-2009, 06:42 PM Mine do good on 18% Proptein and 5% Fat. I would thing the 20% - 7% would be really good.

Nice. I have to pay $32.31. :(
Halfdawg 03-10-2009, 06:32 PM I was just at the tampa show this past weekend and I saw he has it for 16.50 for 50lbs. I told him that if I was to buy 5 or 6 bags it would pay for me to get it from him. He has some nice shreded aspen for 10 bucks a bale. The only thing is I live in St Pete so If I add fuel to the price I am better off pay 21.50 right down the street at Park Feed.
Richard
I'll be looking into this, just picked up some more Mazuri 6F at $20/bag.

Hey Larry............yep, what halfdawg said. I was at the show too and he quoted me the same price if I picked it up at his shop in Ybor. I specifically explained to him that I was just a private individual with no other affiliations and that I would only be buying a few bags at a time. He said that was fine and quoted me the same price. That's a full $10 cheaper the Largo Feed.
Larry Petty 03-10-2009, 11:13 PM I'm going to check it out. Ybor is not far from me, plus I work downtown.
A rat breeder friend of mine is looking to change foods. He is going to do some trial runs with Southern States and ADM swine feed. If it works out, this feed will only be about $10 a bag. I do know that some big rat breeders in Miami use both of these companies. Just not sure of the formula yet.
Until I get this figured out, I will stick with Mazuri at $16.50 a bag!
Called a local Farming store near us to see if they had any, all they had was a medicated concentration. Hoping she can call and see if it is something they can get in at a reasonable price. Wouldn't mind trying it.
smilin-buddha 03-13-2009, 08:38 AM Finally found the pictures I have tried alot and keep coming back to SOuthern States. I have used it for several years. I have a friend that has been using it for a long time. I pay around 11 dollars a bag. I also have a friend that mixes Maz with it. I do supplement with table scraps and also some seed mixture. It works for my Rats and ASf.

Hey Evan,
This is one my friend is testing. My only concern is the fat being so low. Have you compared your production using this food to using something like Harlan or Mazuri?
Larry Petty 03-13-2009, 08:58 AM I didn't see the part where you said you supplement with seed and table scraps.
ssscales 03-13-2009, 10:54 AM Mazuri at $16.50 is not bad at all at that price. I wouldn't even bother switching to something unproven to be better at those prices. Maybe test it on a few groups raised on those other feeds and see how they do. I don't believe that $16.50 price on Mazuri will hold for much longer, soon that $16.50 will be $18+. We went from $15 to $18 and now $21/50lb bag of Mazuri, but production is steady and I have no complaints. I wish I could find them at $16.50 and stock up for a few months, or find an equal quality product at $10-$12 a bag.
Larry Petty 03-13-2009, 12:15 PM That is exactly why I am looking for a replacement. That price will not hold, I am sure. Fortunately, I have a friend who is a large rodent breeder who is looking to switch. I should be able to get the new food we are going to test for about $10 a bag. My buddy will be able to get it cheaper, but he buys tons at a time.
smilin-buddha 03-13-2009, 01:28 PM You have to use what works for you. I do not buy enough bags to qualify for any discount. I am just feeding my small collection. I went from Mazurai to Flint river mills. And had little difference. Even if you just mix the two it is saving 5 bucks per hundred pounds. I have tested it and noticed little change. I made the switch totally and have been happy. The guy that uses Southern states and has been for the last 10 years or more. And he always seems to have enough rats. It fits in the food hopper is harder and seems to work. I was just passing on information. Try it on a few trays and see if you like it. If not Mazurai is always there. Around here it is 21.00 a bag. SO I am saving 20 or more dollars a month. I just found it hard that they are always raising their prices this food at its peak was 12.50 a bag. Not its around 11.

Thanks for the info. We'll try it and see how it goes. I actually know of a big breeder in Miami that uses Southern State. He has been for years. If it didn't work well, I'm sure he wouldn't use it.
Halfdawg 03-15-2009, 01:43 AM Park feed just raised there price to 23.95 for 5m30 6f. I told the guy I guess I am heading to Tampa in the future to Smelt feed to get the feed at 16.50. He said Smelt Feed is the largest dealer in the state. If I buy 2 bags or more its worth the drive.
Richard
We all might be presently surprised at how long the 16.50 price holds. I bought the same stuff from him over a year ago and it was the same price. You would have thought that in the last year, it would have went up. I asked him at the show last week why Largo feed (among others) were charging so much and he just said that he likes to pass the savings onto his customers.
13north 03-15-2009, 06:01 PM Looks like I will be driving over to Tampa soon to load up the truck.
Forrest 03-24-2009, 08:02 PM I would be happy if I could get mazuri at that price in NV it is almost 40$ a bag! I drive to CA for my feed now. I have talked with a guy out in Florida that was using the Southern States feed also and his rats are big and production is good.
