I'm not sure how much my backyard would be considered "field herping", but I've found a couple of these little guys in the past few days. I did see two at once so I know there's at least that many. Back story is I saw a large Checkered a couple of times last year and then late last year some newborns. Glad to see they're breeding and growing up around the yard.

The head is a little out of focus, was rushing to take the pic before it decided to bolt.

Then this morning this one decided the patio was a great place to warm up.

cute checkereds. backyard herping is the best when you have herps living there. :D

Very nice! Nothing like seeing baby snakes growing up under your protection.

Very nice yard you have. That's the way to go herping.

Thanks all! We really lucked out by moving into an older, established neighborhood with nice huge trees and almost half an acre lot. The list of animals seen in our yard besides these guys is not bad - rabbit, raccoon, possum, too many squirrels and over 120 species of birds.
