Well, I was going to take some pics of the coxi today, got a few before I realized I hadn't charged the camera batteries in weeks... oh well, maybe I try again later in the weekend - until then, here is one of the red gals.

FloridaHogs 04-10-2009, 08:41 PM OK give me the common name for that beauty!
thanks gang..
Jenea - They are Oreocryptophis porphyraceus coxi. I have always called them coxi for their common name, as do many others. They are also sometimes refered to as red mountain racers or bamboo rat snake.
FloridaHogs 04-10-2009, 08:49 PM Thanks. What is their temperment like?
Thanks. What is their temperment like?
Curious and very active. I don't handle mine very often, so mine a little fiesty sometimes, but usually settle down pretty quick.
They are really fun to work with, and have a bad wrap for being difficult. I honestly don't think they are difficult - just require different conditions then most rats. Give em the right setup, and they seem to thrive with very little effort from me.
FloridaHogs 04-10-2009, 09:03 PM OK, so what is the right set up?? :)
JOHNS6068 04-10-2009, 09:03 PM Now that is RED...needed my shades on to see this one:lol:
I agree very nice looking
Jenea - think tri-color hogs, only without the trouble getting them to eat.
I keep mine around 75-80, a good humid hide. I keep mine on damp paper towels, and the hide box is full of spaghnum.
anendeloflorien 04-10-2009, 09:43 PM Those guys are definitely cool looking.
147BOAS 04-10-2009, 09:58 PM wow red is right sweet

Oh I do not keep the tris like that. Way to humid for a tri. I learned the hard way that tris are very prone to RI's when to humid. They only get the humid hide now when they are in shed.......

So basically you are saying no extra heat, just good ambients, and lots of humidity. What % humidity are you aiming for?
JChandler 04-10-2009, 10:47 PM Beautiful Tim!
Melanie 04-10-2009, 11:13 PM That's awesome! I've never seen em before!
Chico_Reptiles 04-11-2009, 06:19 AM That's a smoker man!

Really? I always kept mine like that with no problem, I don't have tri's anymore, but it is still good to know - just in case I get them again some day.
I do have just a bit of heat on them, as the room they are in is usually right at 72 degrees. The heat is minimal though, raising one end to around 78ish and letting the cool end drop to room temp.
I have no idea what the actual humidity % is, but I would guess the tubs are around 50-60% with the hides being around 75-85%. It is not extreme, just damp.

ha.. maybe - Jenea if you are really interested, there is not a lot of information out there on Coxi. You will be able to find a few sites though. ProExotics/Robyn is one of the best resources for sure. They have a care sheet on their site - it is simple, but really so is the care.
The key to it, understanding that you can't keep them like you would a native colubrid - once you understand that and make the adjustments - it is time to just sit back and enjoy.
these are older pics, but since there are a few that seem to have never seen coxi - here are a few to tide you guys over until I get a chance to take some new pics.

FloridaHogs 04-11-2009, 08:56 AM Thanks Tim. Yeah, I forget that my humidity is much higher here than other places....60% is the average :) Might have something to do with the difference in husbandry.
Man, that is just one cool snake. I like the looks of it ALOT!
guyergenetics 04-11-2009, 09:22 AM Man, that's a screamer! I like the racing stripes.

Haven't priced them lately eh? They are awesome animals, and the price has dropped and leveled out now. I can remember when they $1500 each - but you can get a pair for under a grand now. I traded woma babies for mine, but I think they are running in the $400-500 each range right now.
Southern Wolf 04-11-2009, 09:25 PM much better

I have a long list wanting them this year, and not many eggs - but come next season I will have several girls go - if you are still looking we will figure out a trade.
