At what size should leopard geckos start courting and developing eggs? How many months old are they "mature" (on average)?

My females start to cycle around 8 or 9 months. You want to try to get them to 50+ grams before breeding them because egg laying is hard on them and they tend to drop a lot of weight. Once they start laying you will have no control over how many clutches they lay and if she starts to get too thin you may lose her. Males I've heard sexually mature at 90 days however I haven't ever gotten any of mine to go before 5 months.

Size does matter. I bred my engima male when he was way too young and small.. I did get viable eggs that hatched out some little bell/enigma babies BUT it nearly cost my enigma male his life.

The females beat him up so bad one day. Ripped his tail off along with one of his eyes. All because he was too small to be in there with them in the first place.

Now I know better...:(

Good point Larry, whenever trying to breed males I have a 45 gram rule. Not because they can't breed at a lower weight then that but because females tend to be a bit aggressive when they don't want to mate and I like my males to be able to stand up for themselves. No punks allowed in my breeding program. :machinegun:

This will be my first time breeding leos but I am going to wait until my boys and girls are 50+ grams. At the rate they are growing shouldn't take long.

Good to know guys, thanks. They are about the same size right now, so it shouldn't be a problem. But I would not have thought of that before.

Wow that sucks Larry. Glad you did not lose him.
