View Full Version : How do you breed Kenyan Sand Boas? brm 05-16-2009, 05:34 PM As title really how do you breed kenyan sand boas? what conditioning is needed? temp cycles? etc etc thanks:yessir: HiImSteveDuh 05-16-2009, 08:11 PM its easy. all you do is nothing. keep them together all year once they are adults, then starting around feburaryish, the male will shed, and after he sheds he will start to pair up with her. But up until that shed the male will show no intrest, then as soon as he sheds BOOM he will quit eating and just start pairing up with her. my male tries to pair up with my female literally 24/7 from march 20th to now, its just like a switch gets thrown in his head after he sheds, and he will not eat or sleep, just attempt to pair up with that female. thats what makes these guys so easy to breed, no real temp cycling is needed, just the room temp slightly lowering in winter is enough, but no adjusting the hot spot or anything. after they mate for a little while the female will start to get a lump in her towards her rear, but not all the way to the end of her tail (see picture), and that means she is developing folicules/ tiny babies. Then a few months later she will look like she is about to explode she is so fat, then about 3 weeks after that in late july-october she will drop babies. http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp33/HiImSteveDUh/pregoksb.jpg brm 05-17-2009, 11:24 AM so they dont really need anything to stimulate breeding? someone else told m they need dropping to 60-70F for 3 months? but if all that is needed is the male to shed then thats perfect! HiImSteveDuh 05-17-2009, 04:55 PM so they dont really need anything to stimulate breeding? someone else told m they need dropping to 60-70F for 3 months? but if all that is needed is the male to shed then thats perfect! Temp cycling in the winter deffinetly couldn't hurt, but its not neccisary. constrictorkeeper 05-17-2009, 08:03 PM so they dont really need anything to stimulate breeding? someone else told m they need dropping to 60-70F for 3 months? but if all that is needed is the male to shed then thats perfect! i kept them separate all year with a 90-ish degree hot spot. come march i would just slide their tubs off the hot spot (my tubs have tops) only at night, so they'd still have a warm ambient. i always left the tub in the slot, just pulled it out 'till it was off the tape. do this for 8 weeks. put together in may. they usually breed immediately. i personally wouldn't leave them together all year round. (anymore...) not that steve's plan wouldn't work (there are many ways to skin the kenyan cat...). maybe steve doesn't know that i once had to extract my male's head from his cage-mate girlfriend's mouth (and just in time too ! ) they're pretty easy to breed. make sure you've fed the female well, you shouldn't have a problem. good luck, ck HiImSteveDuh 05-17-2009, 09:04 PM maybe steve doesn't know that i once had to extract my male's head from his cage-mate girlfriend's mouth (and just in time too ! ) they're pretty easy to breed. make sure you've fed the female well, you shouldn't have a problem. good luck, ck Thats a really good point about keeping them together. I feed them in a seperate tub, then leave them in there for a little while, to sort of calm down after the meal, so that when i put them back together they wont still be in "hunt mode" but still, accidents can happen. Although thats the first time i have heard of a kenyan eating (or trying to eat) a cagemate. Although it wouldnt suprise me if there are people who have had that happen to them also out there. Then again when i got my kenyans they were being kept together and had been since birth, and so far i have never had any problems. So i think thats a pretty rare occurance, but better safe then sorry. brm 05-18-2009, 12:35 PM ah right. well at least i know i dont have to put much effort in to breed them! norsmis 05-18-2009, 01:38 PM Good info here. Owned a few in the mid 90's but never tried to breed them. Thanks for the info! brm 05-21-2009, 05:52 PM so if i wa to drop day temps 5 dgrees and drop night down to 70 for a couple of months you think tht will be enough?(just to clarify) HiImSteveDuh 05-21-2009, 09:53 PM so if i wa to drop day temps 5 dgrees and drop night down to 70 for a couple of months you think tht will be enough?(just to clarify) i would only drop it to about 75 at night. And also i would leave the hot spot the same during the day. but you can drop it some but just make sure they are warm enough to digest food, you should keep feeding all the way through the cooling for as long as they will eat. breeding these guys is really easy. theres not many ways to really screw it up, so whatever you do temp cycling wise, chances are you will end up getting an awsome litter of babies regardles. |
