Alright, I know there are similar threads, on other forums, about getting certified to ship reptiles through FedEx but it would be nice to have one right here at home...

Who would like to give us the details from start to Certified.?.

In light of what happened with reptster recently I was going to look into getting fedex certified for next year. Even if I don't get big discounts at least I have options and not have all my eggs in one basket. If anyone has any links or tips to becoming fedex certified I'm also interested.

Thanks for the links. I'm chatting with a member of another forum who is certified and said it only took him 3 weeks and cost nothing. He posted that every now and then he runs into problems with fedex saying they don't accept snakes and he has had his paperwork certified to ship snakes in hand and still had to call his rep to clear things up. I'm going to get started on this and just set up a fedex account online.

Check with DHL first. I found a post on another forum stating that they were either shutting down or cutting back. Not sure how true it is but the guy that posted the conversation isn't quick to jump on just anything.

I don't think either DHL or UPS ships live snakes anymore... Well UPS does but only for those accounts who were approved for it before they changed their policy.

Getting Fed Ex certified was easy... if I can do it, anyone can... ;) Just follow the instructions at the ball-pythons.net link.

I found the hardest part was getting your account rep to call, telling them you have the potential to ship alot during breeding season worked well to get them to return my call.

Once that is done the rest was done in a week, everything was sent in PDF's through email. I would sign, scan and send back...really quick.

I followed the info from the fauna link back when I got certified with Fed Ex. My first rep SUCKED, he had no idea what he was doing and had no motivation to go find answers for me. So I got a new one. She's one of the sweetest people I have talked to there. She EVEN CALLS ME :D to make sure everything is going good every now and then. I'm by no means a large volumne shipper either. I think once I got a new rep the whole process might have taken 2 weeks as opposed to a month going by with my first rep and nothing. The only other problem I have had was with trying to get through on Fed Ex's automated lines, there a joke, the folks answering usually have no idea about reptile shipping. I really think that your account rep is either going to make or break your Fed Ex experience, if you rep sucks get a new one and be sure to get their direct number.

I signed up for a fedex account the other day and my local fedex rep called me the very next morning. He wanted to introduce himself and ask about my needs to better serve them. I told him I anticipated shipping between 20 to 40 packages next year and asked about shipping snakes. He said I had to get certified and that he was going to fax me the paperwork and instructions to getting certified in a few minutes. This was at about 9:00AM yesterday and as of this morning I've got nothing, I'll call him this afternoon. He seemed nice enough but was a bit sarcastic when I asked about discounts and mentioned 20 to 40 packages a year. I don't expect to ship anything till middle of next year. Does that certification expire anytime?

I will say this I just finished this process myself. To let you know how willing Fed-Ex is willing to work with us. Reptile and fish people are the only ones that Fed-Ex pays for the shipping of your test package to their testing center. Everyone else has to come out of pocket for this.

I donno know about UPS shipping live animals. I wouldnt use them. Ive heard some horrible stories of how bad they next day deliver. I've recieved the majority of my animals through Fedex and never once had a promblem, Knock on wood. It seems they're the best way to go if everyone talks about getting Fedex certified

It is illegal to ship snakes via UPS unless your account was grandfathered in (meaning you had it before the policy change). DHL is indeed going under and closing their doors. FedEd certification is easy.

1. Set up an online account

2. Call your local rep and tell him wat you are wanting and request the proper paperwork.

3. Fill out paper work and prepare a sample test box to be approved by FedEx (pack it exactly as you would shipping to a customer, just leave the snake out.)

4. Wait for your box to be approved.

5. Call your rep again and double check that everything is in order. Make sure you have signed their lovely waiver that tells you that you are screwed if they mess up, otherwise you are not certified.

6. As soon as all your paperwork is all in hand, take it all down to the location you are planning on shipping from and talk to the clerks. Show them the paperwork and tell them what you are doing. Ask if them if there is anything you need to do for them to insure that your packages are not held up. Ask them is there is anyway to "flag" your account so that all the clerks working will know you are certified. Be proactive and do not wait until an animal is in the box. That will go a long way in helping things go smoothly.

What do you mean "get their reptile shipping up and going."? They had it and quite. Do you know something the rest of us don't??

You can ship everything except snakes now through UPS, but the main thing is Pro Exotics is in a pilot program with UPS to ship snakes....they have had great success from my understanding...

Robyn brings it up here...

OK, I knew they shipped everything but snakes, but did not know about the pilot program. Why do they need a pilot program when they have grandfathered vendors like Alex still shipping with them??

There has been reported issues with the grandfathered people having issues in certain hubs from what I understand. Just unifying the system and working out any bugs would be my guess.
