What ratio perlite to water do you use? I use 6qt containers. I usually use vermiculite but the stuff I've been getting this year is like dust. So I'm going to try perlite on the rest of my clutches this year. Thanks

I use larger containters (15 qt) and I put about 3 inches of dry perlite in and flatten out the top. Then I pour some water in and make a hole with my finger in the middle of the perlite. Then I watch the water rise up till its about halfway up to the top of the hole. I use the lids on the containers with just a few small wholes in the sides (where the plastic latches used to be). The eggs just sit on top of the plastic light grating. I wipe off the condensation on the lids about one a week. I know that's a weird way to measure it but its worked great for me for the last three seasons. Varanus99 05-19-2009, 07:37 PM I also use perlite since I cant find vermiculite around me. I use a 10 parts perlite to 8 parts water by weight. Its been working fine but Im switching over to the grate method since everyone seems to be having remarkable success going that route. This is for lizard eggs BTW so bear that in mind. I can tell you though when I was going with a 1:1 ratio it was too wet. Larry 05-19-2009, 07:37 PM Wish I could help you but I've only ever used vermiculite solo, I don't like mine tainted...:D norsmis 05-19-2009, 07:45 PM I do the same as Vman and have for years with leo and colubrid eggs. I also hatched some woma eggs last year but used a drier mix of 1 part perlite to .5 part water. FloridaHogs 05-19-2009, 09:01 PM I also use perlite since I cant find vermiculite around me. Albey, correct me if I'm wrong. Bought a HUGE bag at our local nursery (Pikes) that will last me the rest of my life. I know Albey uses it for his geckos and his ball pythons. Brock wagner 05-20-2009, 07:02 PM I have been using Perlite now for 6 years. It works great. I just mix it up till clumps then I drain some of the water from the egg box and it works great. I don't want to use anything else as Perlite works just great. Brock |
