Have you considered breeding mealies Larry?

we have a nice lil' colony going ourselves... Of course we only have 10 leo's at the moment but it's nice to be able to be self sufficient...

Larry, i'm buying a bunch too. I just bought 3,000 more. How do you separate yours from the substrate? I tried to get a sifter and it doesn't work. I keep mine on a bran substrate.

I've been going at Bush-League style picking through by hand but I'm going to start using some type of strainer..

Holy shiz man! You pick them out by hand! I wonder if it hurts the gecko if some of the bran bedding gets in the dish? They seem to be good at picking out the mealworms from anything else. Larry, we have to figure out an easier way to separate the mealies. I'll do a little research.

If you put a few layers of newspaper or a couple egg cartons over 2/3 of the substrate the mealworms will often crawl into the spaces. Then you can just lift out the paper/carton and shake them into a container and you're all set. Clean wormies no substrate.

If they dont crawl in you can very lightly spray the paper or carton. Just lightly, you dont want to get the substrate wet at all and you dont have to soak the paper. Just a small amount of moisture seems to attract them. But generally they will crawl into the paper or cartons without any help.

Picking them out by hand? That's Bush. Bush-League, baby! I'll learn all you ball python people how to feed lizards. Yessir, I'll learn ya good and proper.

Wow, awesome tip. I never occurred to me that when I get my mealworms they are packed in newspaper. I am going to start using that one for sure.

I go through about 20k mealworms a week. :( It is amazing how many leos can eat. Years ago I use to breed mealworms, but just couldn't keep up after I got more than a few leos.

I'm glad it's easy to find them again. I hate feeding crickets!

Where are you guys ordering your mealies from in bulk? I want to start a colony, and am thinking of getting about 5,000 (2,000 for the colony, 3,000 to feed off while getting established). I am also considering supers, but have my contact for those (www.crix-n-wiggles.com). I was thinking of slamming a big order on nyworms.com, but I wasn't sure where else to turn. Any ideas?
