View Full Version : Incubator types??
JOHNS6068 10-30-2008, 11:56 AM This is my first year breeding ball pythons. Trying to decide still what route I will go on my incubator. I'm just curious as to what everyone uses and how successful or unsuccessful they have been with what they use?? Pictures of them would be awesome:)
Rick247 10-30-2008, 04:12 PM I use and old fridge with flex watt and a t-stat.
Larry 10-30-2008, 04:23 PM I use an old fridge as well with some closet shelves installed inside. about 10' of 11" flexwatt attached to a Helix T-stat. Perfect temps I rest easy every night..:)
JChandler 10-30-2008, 07:22 PM I use the mini fridge style...

shrap 10-30-2008, 07:59 PM I currently have what was a commercial fridge unit and an old upright freezer as incubators. Both heated with flexwatt hooked up to a Herpstat.
Almost any used appliance store has old fridge/freezers that they are throwing away. They will give them to you just to avoid the dump fees. Free fridge, $10 worth of Flexwatt and a thermostat. You dont get any better value for the money.
I use Natures Spirit incubators built by Casey Hulse and i can only say good things about them!!!
Ill snap a few shots of them and post em up later

Same here, I usually use the 9 inch pre punched deli cups to incubate the eggs in.... works for me.
Cornball 10-30-2008, 09:03 PM I use an old freezor with flex watt and a Helix.
Alicia Holmes 10-30-2008, 09:06 PM Last year i used a cooler as an incubator. and it worked pretty good. This year, i want something with a bit more stability and insulation. Im also going to add more flexwatt to get more even temps, rather than heating from one side.
I might get myself a small fridge or something to test out. :) be nice to get one of them counter top Fridges for the energy drinks or something, with the glass front. :) then i dont have to open it to peek all the time.
Nutsboutballs 10-31-2008, 09:19 AM I did the same out of a cooler I bought at wal-mart for $45.00 on sale and some plans I got off some site, worked fine for the few clutches I had. I'll use the same one this year but plan to get a new fridge in 2 years and convert my old one.

You mean something like this, Alicia?

....but peeking is the best part.
luciddream 10-31-2008, 12:12 PM I use one I built. It's 3/4" melamine with insulation and shelves mounted inside. Flexwatt taped to the back, a helix and two computer fans for air circulation. The door has a cut out with plexi mounted to the front and back to create an insulated window. I put foam padding around where the door meets the unit for insulation and it is held shut with a magnet thingy for cabinet doors.
It's kinda small and won't fit all the clutches I expect this year, so I will also be using an old freezer I have in my basement.

That's a nice one there Sammy...I use a chest freezer turned on it's side...Installed some shelves and 2 foot of 11 inch heat tape - Works like a champ every year...
Rapture 10-31-2008, 02:28 PM I have a GQF incubator that I bought from a guy that was getting out of Bearded Dragons. Comes with a proportional thermostat and a wafer thermostat just in case the proportional fails. It can hold 12 or 15 shoebox tubs at a time. Right now it's just the right size for me. Holds temps fine and has a clear door.
West Coast Pythons 11-07-2008, 10:43 PM Heres the 5th one !
I used the sheet insulation 4 inches top bottom and sides.

rabernet 11-07-2008, 11:01 PM I got this incubator from Justin Kobylka last year and it was sentimental to me in that my het clown male was hatched in this incubator and my first season, I was incubating his first sired clutch!
Since he was "upgrading" in size, he contacted me and offered this one to me when he saw me asking incubator questions last year.

Worked like a charm! This year I'll likely "downsize" my incubating tubs to the six quart sterilite to maximize room.
papaK 11-08-2008, 01:10 PM I've used the cooler incubator technique with a herpstat and had great success for lots and lots of gecko eggs and last years bp eggs... I am going to need to upgrade this year and will probably convert a mini fridge.
jasballs 11-08-2008, 01:53 PM I use an old fridge and a space heater w/built in thermostat. no fan or helix needed.
