View Full Version : Houston... we have a problem
Southern Wolf 05-29-2009, 02:34 AM So tonight me and Blake were cleaning Corns and Kings enclosures. I get to my female sunglow motley... and.... well..... theres a problem.
I have had this snake since early Janurary. She is an 07 baby... and only around 200 grams... if she's lucky.
I slid the tub out of the rack.... and Im sure the look on my face was priceless... cause Blake asked... whats wrong.
All I could do was point.
There on top of the newspaper was an egg.... or actually a slug. Its not even remotely fertile. There are at least 3 more visible lumps inside her. She has NEVER been with another snake since she has been in my care.
Im really worried that she may egg bind with these slugs.
Guyer... have you ever heard of such?
Me and Blake are keeping a close eye on her.
JChandler 05-29-2009, 06:56 AM Possible they get at a certain age and want to lay...give her a moist hide and a good soak and try to feed her...good luck man
Kevin, what if the other eggs are good. Does parthogenesis happen in corns? Could it be a case of retained sperm?

I've never heard of pathogenesis in corns but nothing with corns surprises me anymore...
norsmis 05-29-2009, 08:35 AM I have never had it happen to me but have heard stories. And Jeff is right, nothing surprises me with corns. Pathogenesis might be a new recessive morph with them..... :D
guyergenetics 05-29-2009, 09:36 AM Kevin, I have heard of this but have never experienced it myself. I am in complete agreement with what Jeff said as far as what to do. Hopefully the rest come out ok. Keep us updated and best of luck.
FloridaHogs 05-29-2009, 09:41 AM Ditto what Jeff said....see if she will eat.

Neither have I - but I know where there are eggs incubating from two different species right now that I had never heard of pathogenesis in before this year. The odd common thread is that both of those clutches where from extremely young mothers as well.
It is getting to the point where it really takes something crazy to surprise to me know.
Southern Wolf 05-29-2009, 11:11 AM Kevin, what if the other eggs are good. Does parthogenesis happen in corns? Could it be a case of retained sperm?
I talked to the guy I got them from... and he informs me that she has never been housed with another snake..... so I dont see how it could be retained sperm.
rocko 05-29-2009, 03:06 PM Wow thats weird they will probably all be infertile though
Southern Wolf 05-29-2009, 03:34 PM I wish they didnt exhist... Im worried about her being able to pass them with her being as small as she is. :(
Sputnik 05-29-2009, 05:32 PM I talked to the guy I got them from... and he informs me that she has never been housed with another snake..... so I dont see how it could be retained sperm.
No Sir, I never had her paired with anything.... not even for a minute!
Weird stuff.... as I said, hope she passes them with no ill concerns.
JChandler 05-29-2009, 08:40 PM I have had corns lay eggs without being bred before, but mine have always been seasoned breeders that I was just giving a year off...maybe something in air triggered her, some weird smell or something.
Hope she is okay and Tim shoot me a PM over the different species, you got me very curious now if you don't want to say it here...
Southern Wolf 05-29-2009, 08:58 PM Im hoping I get home tonight and she has passed them. I gave her a soak before I came to work.
Mrs. Sputnik 05-30-2009, 12:03 AM How is she doing Kevin??
Southern Wolf 05-30-2009, 12:36 AM I talked to Rich Z... and he said it would be best to let her alone for a while... and not to stress her out. He also stated they pass the slugs easier than fertile eggs... so Im just gonna keep my fingers crossed... and will check on her in a day or so.
guyergenetics 05-30-2009, 09:15 AM I hope that it goes well. I'll call you Tuesday about this.
FloridaHogs 05-30-2009, 02:36 PM See if she will eat Kevin. That helped my girl pass her slugs
Southern Wolf 05-30-2009, 06:14 PM Will try.... thanks Jenea.
When I went into the herp room today... she was in the laying box. I didnt disturb her
Southern Wolf 06-03-2009, 02:38 PM Well it just keeps gettin better and better..... or actually just damnd strange.
I talked to the breeder I got her from... and he swears she was never housed with another snake... and I know for a fact she was never housed with another snake here at my house.
Thus the surprise when I got the original slug. Well I have been following Rich Z's advice and I have left her alone so I wouldnt stress her out.
Today Im checking on the snakes that have egg boxes (had 3 with boxes) and I popped the lid to the box that held this sunglow and found this.

The egg were burried a little better than that... but I uncovered them a bit for the photo.
What shocked the shit out of me... was they really didnt look like slugs....

Damnd if I know.... but Im trying to incubate them.... lets see what happens.
FloridaHogs 06-03-2009, 02:45 PM Crazy Kevin!!! That middle one especially looks good!
Jaymz 06-03-2009, 02:46 PM Maybe she is parthenogenic or you have rogue rico suave corn snake roaming around visiting you lady snakes late at night. He wears a hat with a feather.
Wow Kevin, that is strange. Hope those eggs are fertile. That would be pretty cool. ;)
Southern Wolf 06-03-2009, 04:49 PM Strange is an understatement. Im not holding my breath.. but we shall see
JChandler 06-03-2009, 06:18 PM They aren't slugs in the sense of things they are just unfertilized eggs if that makes any sense at all...she went through the motions due to some outer factor (my guess hormones in the air due to the others breeding and sending off the signals--my youngest male is still going crazy due to the scent of the females right above him that have just laid)...
I would shine a light in the middle one to be sure but I bet they are all bad...at least you know now that she can give you eggs next year...
guyergenetics 06-04-2009, 09:26 AM They look kind of skinny but then again they did come from a small female. They are probably infertile but I'd try to hatch them anyway. Anymore, you just never know. You might end up with something really unique here.
Sputnik 06-04-2009, 01:21 PM They have to be infertile.... I wouldn't expect them to hatch, at least they are out....
