What is the purpose of the flat floor web these guys spin? For trapping prey? To use as a sack to store dead prey in? I was feeding my boys T tonight and noticed that as she ate she laid down this web on the floor of the enclosure. Then she dragged it all, like a fish net all balled up, to the entrance of her hide. What's up with that?

The webbing on the floor helps them feel when a prey item is close. Tarantulas don't use webbing like garden spiders do. They use them for decoration, housing or for feeling when prey is close. They do rap there prey in web, scientist way is like a way to make sure there prey stay fresh longer.

Ohh and they parts that she cant eat she balls up like you mention and does are just the left overs that she won't eat. So take them from her because they can grow mold.

Thanks for the info. Them using it as a way to feel when prey in near is another thought I had because she started doing it as soon as she caught the firsrt cricket.

OK, here's a pic of what she does looks like. Nothing inside. Just a pile of webbing with eco earth adhered to it.
