I've got a 450 gm male spider that I've got big plans for this year, I haven't gotten any sperm plugs from him yet. I was curious how many of you folks put a lot of emphasis on seeing plugs or do you mainly go by weight and his behavior. He should be up around 600 gms by the end of December/early January as he has eaten like a horse since I've had him. I've read that not seeing plugs does not mean he's not producing, but it would be nice to have that reassurance.

If he's producing sperm, then there's a good chance he'll get it on!

If a male has plugs he is ready to go. If I see plugs I through the male to females that have yet to show signs (cooling, bowl wrapping etc.) It usually gets the females kicked in to gear.
I haven't checked for plugs on males in a couple of years so I guess my answer is I don't...

never worried too much about plugs...
put him in, watch the behavior, feed some more, try again.
good luck,

Do you know to pop?
The way I check for sperm plugs is simply to pop them... Usually if a male is producing sperm you will know when you just start to evert the hemipenes.
It definitely wouldn't hurt to pair your spider with any of your females that are up to size... Best of luck to ya! :)

Yeah I can pop and so far no plugs. I'm cooling him and he'll be put with my mojave and a normal, we'll see what happens. Weighed him yesterday and he's 507 gms so keeping my fingers crossed.

plugs or not, keep alternating feeding and intros with the girls, as he gets bigger, and he realizes there will be womenfolk at large, he'll come around.
it's a long season.
good luck, spiders may be crazy...but they learn quickly.
