greek: translates to "cup mouth" i think.
refers to a genus of salamanders including tigrinum, the tiger salamander.
awesome little buggers, some with phenominal color.
thinkin' of gettin' back into 'em, they're hard to locate where i am 'cause the local population is protected in n.y. wonderin' if anyone on here works with 'em.
tigers are the biggest of the genus (i'm pretty sure) i had one as a teen that was a solid 12 " long, ate strips of beef out of my hand !
stout and beautiful.

I don't keep them now, mainly because I can't find them anymore, but like you I had one as a kid. It was probably close to a foot long by the time we let it go. We had it for maybe three years.

Tiger salamanders run rampant up here in the spring time, and blue spots, which I believe are Ambystoma as well. Cool little critters, and the Tigers actually get larger than most people realize.

I believe that they definitely are legal to collect where I'm originally from in Minnesota, Wisconsin I don't know... they should be as long as they aren't a threatened species here.
