Varanus99 07-11-2009, 02:26 PM Looks good! That looks like a nice, healthy little ripper. Good size, too.
You didnt wash him down with the 409, didja? :lmao:
Gonna have to change your sig. Congrats on the new addition. Take lots of pics he/she is not gonna be that size very long. :D

Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 02:31 PM :) I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE 409! good grief lol
wow...
But yeah, there was only 3 different tables with them, these were $10 (Mom caved and let me get him before i sold the snake - still have to sell him... i might have a buyer tho... ) these guys were healthy looking - whereas another table had one that had not moved in like 2 hours, i asked if it was even still alive and the lady poked it and was like "they are lazy lizards" i held back my initial reaction and i was like, mine isnt...
But yeah :) im stoked... (just changed the sig too)
DONT TELL MOM HOW FAST THEY GROW!! (oh wait... she's reading this...) lol
i'll be good till we move :) or longer...
then he'll eat chicks... ;D

i'll be good till we move :) or longer...
Now that I look more closely I see that it is a slower growing sub species of the savannah monitor. Varanus exanthematicus slowgrowius if Im not mistaken.
:D
And c'mon how could I NOT mention the 409 :lmao:
$10. Sheeesh.
Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 02:56 PM BAHAHAHA you're awesome V...
and yeah, he hardly has much black or grayish on him at all... and all the others (except one) were that sandy tan color... :)
micha 07-11-2009, 04:09 PM Wow , a slowgrowius  :rolleyes:need one of these :D
basuca 07-11-2009, 04:19 PM Nice addition Sara good to see you around.
Varanus99 07-11-2009, 04:46 PM Wow , a slowgrowius  :rolleyes:need one of these :D
They are very rare. Despite the fact that it is a totally different group of animals some folks believe they are loosely related to Python molurus stuntatus
:D
JChandler 07-11-2009, 04:56 PM Nice pick up Sara!
Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 05:49 PM He's super adorable... Likes his chin rubbed :) got him a hide temporarily set up till Monday, then I'll be setting up a better deal and have the plexi put on the cage perminately :)
I put two crickets in his cage, he ate a cricket then decided I was scary and ran into his hide lol... :)

He ate already. Good sign. Its not unusual for them to need 24-48 hours...sometimes even longer...to settle in before they feed. But having him eat right away is certainly a bonus.
Its good that you gave him a hide. Even if its just a temp one he needs a place to get away from big scary you
FloridaHogs 07-11-2009, 07:03 PM He is a CUTIE!!! Very curious and alert...I got to hold him at the show:D
Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 07:05 PM He's got one on each side... both have some of that bedding in them so he can burrow...
couple questions though...
should i dust the crickets? or gut load them?
what is the best stuff to do either with?
Should i look into deworming him? if so what is the process there?
oh, and whats the best way to make that stacking hide thing? is there a website for that? for some reason im connecting that to an Ackie website but now i cant find it...
i was going to see if i had the stuff here to do that... :)
:) :)
anyways :) currently he's sleeping//hiding
im thinking i want to name him Odin... i dont know specifically why... i think he just looks like one ;) haha
Alicia Holmes 07-11-2009, 09:44 PM What an absolute cutie!!! Id love to get myself one of these guys someday.... just totally awesome and cool :D
^_^ Grats!
Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 10:17 PM He's eaten two crickets now...
How many should i feed him a day? as many as he'll eat?
Wild Bill 07-11-2009, 10:22 PM Congrats, he's quite the little guy. :yessir:
Passion4Pythons 07-11-2009, 10:31 PM thanks :)

Yes to both on the crickets. Keep them for 24 hours in a small container and let them eat some goodies. The dust them and feed them to Odin (lol). When he's little you can supplement him every feeding. When he gets a little bigger every other feeding or once a week should do.
For gut loading you can use a piece of potatoe, carrot or orange along with either a prepared cricket diet, chicken mash, baby cereal, something along those lines. Back in the day we used to use the dust that we found at the bottom of rodent chow bags.
Id go for dusting with calcium for most of his feedings and a vitamin dusting once a week or so. I like Miner All and Herpvite but any good quality products will do.
Yes you can feed him as much as he will eat every day or every other day. You can't overfeed a baby, growing monitor. Especially with insects. Go nuts.
Ok, the deworming thing. I have an opinion on this that kinda goes against the grain so bear with me. Just about any WC animal is going to have parasites. And they live long healthy lives both in the wild and in captivity with these parasites. The problems arise when the animal is kept poorly, starts to decline in health and the parasites bloom. Then they are blamed for killing the animal when in reality it was a husbandry problem. I do not have many wild caught lizards any more. At one point I did. At the moment I have a blue tongue skink that has been with me for nearly 20 years and a croc monitor that has been in captivity for close to 9. Id bet you a million dollars they both have parasites since both were taken from the wild as sub adults, plenty of time to collect them. So why are they still alive? The short answer: they are kept under good conditions. Ive never had them checked but I wouldnt be surprised to find that they has parasites.
The products they use to kill parasites are pretty harsh. I alwats prefer NOT to medicate a reptile unless its absolutely, life or death necessary. Now, am I telling you not to treat your animal for parasites? Nope. I would never do that. Its your animal and the final decision has to be yours. If it were me no I would not worm it. I would leave it alone, keep it warm, feed it well and go from there. If you wanted to have it tested to see what the story is there is no harm in that. Who knows, maybe he doesnt have any harmful pathogens.
The other side of this arguement says captivity is a stress on the animal and that stress can cause a parasite bloom. While I do not dispute that captivity is indeed a stress I still maintain that good husbandry is an alternative to parasite meds.
I would be more concerned with good solid husbandry than worms. Thats just me. If worms killed monitors every wild monitor in the world would be dead. If you do decide to deworm him the vet will do a fecal, determine what sort of parasites he has if any and then administer the proper medication to eradicate them.
The Retes Stacks will work for a sav. The spaces will just have to be adjusted accordingly since savs are plump monitors and dont compress as well as an ackie, lol. Here is my Retes Stack How-To:
http://reptileradio.net/reptileradio/showthread.php?t=2008&highlight=retes+stack
The stack will be dandy for a baby-juvie. As a full grown adult it would need to be massive so you might be better off with a basking shelf type deal with maybe one level underneath it to serve as a heated hide. But we got time for all that noise.
Remember a Retes Stack can be made in many ways. I make mine out of luan sheets or thin plywood with spacers sized to fit the animal in question. But you can do the same thing with a nice big stack of cork bark. Ive seen people use stone, thin slate slabs. But if you do that Id make sure they are secured or you could end up with a flat savvy. The key is to have different levels at different temps and a top basking spot. Heated hides are a good thing. As long as you have achieved that goal exactly *how* you do it is up to you.
norsmis 07-12-2009, 08:07 AM COngrats on the new little guy! He looks nice and healthy!
More good info you are oozin there Vman! :D
FloridaHogs 07-12-2009, 08:51 AM V she asked about worms at my suggestions. The table he came off of, had a very very wide variety of animals (mostly lizards and torts) and while some appeared to be quite well, some IMO did not. I am guessing quite a few were WC judging from their appearence. I will try to get some pics of that table today when I am there.
Passion4Pythons 07-12-2009, 01:23 PM Thanks V!
:)
why you lolin at Odin? lol ;)
Well mom is not happy, she just found a lose cricket... they chewed out of the bag last night... (yikes) [currently 4 down, about 3 to go...]

Yeah, some of their snakes didnt look good - and when i asked they said the snakes were WC - that was before i got my sav...

I understand the concern. Whether or not the savs were on a table with WC stuff the savs are WC themselves so the possibility of parasites is already high. If they were exposed to a wide variety of other WC animals than its probably even higher.
I hope I was clear in my response. I'll state again its certainly not a bad idea to have any animal, wild caught or captive bred, checked out by a vet. Thats never a bad idea. I was just saying that the products used to treat the parasites can be harsh. And when you're dealing with a such a tiny varanid its risky business. Thats all. But then again Im old school.
Varanus99 07-12-2009, 02:04 PM Thanks V!

Did I mention you shouldnt leave crickets in a bag overnight? :D
If the sav was on a table with animals that didnt look too good and you want to have him checked out more power to you. Im just saying that the care he receives NOW is going to make more of an impact on his long term health. But if you want to have him checked that decision is yours.
Just as an FYI the sav was WC, too. Even if they told you it was captive born (BS) or "farm raised", "captive hatched". It was still born overseas and exposed to possible pathogens.
Passion4Pythons 07-12-2009, 02:07 PM You were clear yes :)
i've yet to have Akua - my 5 year old ball wormed... and i was told by the owner of the store i got him from back in the day that he was a "farm bred or something like that" he's a big healthy ball...
:)
(and yeah, i know he was probably WC... every one of the savvy's were different color shades, and sizes... lol)
Buckskin 07-12-2009, 05:08 PM Congrats on the Savy
Congrats, Sara. Odin looks good!
Passion4Pythons 07-12-2009, 07:19 PM Thanks!
